On the outskirts of an industrial estate bordering the mountain town of Ibi (interior of Alicante province in SE Spain),the accumulated wreckage of domestic and mechanical life sits solidly against a facade of pale stucco and blue industrial columns.
The colour version of this picture shows how the ferrous stack forms an accidental monument. A cast-iron bathtub, still white, lies tilted among bent scaffolding, rusted drums, and the stripped viscera of engines and objects that once served, now rendered mute.
The pile evokes the Roman concept of the rudera, the rubble of fallen buildings repurposed as foundation for new construction, though here no new construction seems imminent. Hopper might have found loneliness in a diner window; de Chirico might have found dread in an empty piazza. This image finds something quieter still: the democracy of obsolescence.

Mostly sandstones, quartzites, and a septarian nodule.

I really enjoy taking a few of my photographs and putting them together to create something new. Sometimes the effect is just for a subtle texture overlay, and sometimes it is like this – a collage almost as if I were using scissors and paste.
