While cleaning out the old farm house, Wayne and Jim found some old tobacco sticks. The house was on the farm when purchased in 1958. It's coming down.
I went to a property surplus and bought two disposable cameras for a dollar. The exposures were already used up, so I had them developed. On the first roll, an entire string of photos from inside a bus came out. Not much else, nothing telling of direction, location or whatever.
I think they were probably on their last roadtrip for a very long time. Off to a very dark place.
From a collection of found photos, all of railroad engines, rolling stock, etc. Dates are from the early 1980s. Locations unknown, but slides came from the west coast. If you recognize this location, please leave a comment.
I found out last night about this incredible structure that's been erected in the Thames to commemorate the Great Fire of London. On Sunday evening at 8.30pm it will be set alight.
We got up early, and took the tube into town. We walked along Victoria Embankment, spotting the familiar landmarks from the less familiar perspective of North of the Southbank.
The children were actually really quite taken with this - they spotted it from a long way off and were becoming increasingly excited the closer we got.
As it was their last day of the holidays with me, I gave them free choice this afternoon and they wanted to go & see Finding Dory. So a cinema trip it was :)
According to the parish website, the church was damaged by this fire on October 23, 1950....found this set at a local estate sale.

All I know is that this appears to be the story of some good friends.
They've stood near a bus that goes to an airport (Waalhaven perhaps) and the Diergaardelaan in Rotterdam.
There is also one rather tall and modern looking building in one of the photos which could help us find out where it was taken.

MAN'S BODY FOUND.
FLOATING OFF THE WHARF.
The body of an unknown man was found floating in the harbour off the Queen Street wharf, in the small hours of this morning, by the watchman of the Harbour Board, Mr. F. Kennaway. He at once reported the matter to the wharf solice, who sent a dinghy out, and the body was recovered. On examination of the body nothing was found to establish identity. The corpse is apparently that of a labourer about 35 or 40 years of age, and of medium build. He was brown-haired, and clean-shaved, except for a fair moustache. He was dressed in a brown coat, browniah-coloured trousers, woollen singlet and underpants, a shirt, no collar, and black lace-up boots. The only articles in the pockets of his clothing were one penny and a Takapuna resident's ferry ticket. From the appearance of the body it would seem to have been in the water for several days, and the face is somewhat disfigured, but there are no marks on the body. All the outlying police stations were notified of the finding.

EVIDENCE OF IDENTITY.
RESIDENT OF TAKAPUNA.
The identity of the middle-aged man whose body was found floating in the harbour off Queen's Wharf on Wednesday morning has not been definitely established, but there is fairly conclusive evidence that the deceased was Mr. John Henry Wilson, a labourer generally known as "Dick" Wilson, who lodged recently at Takapuna, and whose parents, it is thought, live at Hamilton. An inquest was opened yesterday by the coroner, Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M. John N. Collins, who lodged with John Henry Wilson, said he last saw him alive at the waterside workers' room in Quay Street, on the morning of December 8. Viewing the body, he recognised the deceased by a scar on his cheek, by the teeth, by portions of the clothing, and by the cigarette stains on his fingers. He did not report his disappearance, as deceased had been away before and had told him to take no notice of his temporary absence. The evidence of constables Martin and Fisher was to the effect that the body had been in the water for about a week or ten days. All that was found on it were a penny and a Takapuna ferry ticket. At this stage the inquest was ajourned for further evidence.

The infallible finger print was a factor in confirming the identity of an unknown man whose body was found floating in the harbour off the Queen Street wharf on the morning of December 17. At the inquest conducted subsequently the deceased man was identified as Dick Wilson by a fellow waterside worker. Reference of the unknown individual's finger prints to the police gazette of 1917 confirmed the light thrown on the victim's identity by this witness. This evidence was forthcoming this morning, when the coroner returned his verdict to the effect that the deceased, George Henry Wilson, was found drowned in the harbour.

The rows 13a to 16 in Anglican F are what is known as ‘Potters Fields’, they were used to bury some of the people whose families were unable to afford burial costs, were institutionalised or unidentified at the time of burial. These plots were common graves with many having several individuals interred in each. They were narrower and closer together and, because they were not paid for, permanent grave markers were not permitted to be erected.
It is now no longer known where these rows start or find individual plots of which some are now been protected by native trees, flax and gorse.

Found Agfacolor slide showing a woman* and a Mk III Ford Cortina (JLC 716N). The car was first registered in April 1975 and last taxed to March 1987. At that time, the Cortina was available with a choice of 1.3 litre, 1.6 litre or 2 litre petrol engines, and a choice of L, GL or Ghia trim. This is a 2-litre Ghia - the top of the range.
* Am I sure that it is a woman? Not entirely, but her shoes are a good indication.
