1927 Mercedes-Benz Model K Wins Best in Show at Greenwich Concours

By Jeff Peek / Hagerty.com

Michael and Joannie Rich were looking for just the right car, and in the end, the right car found them. It proved to be a match made in concours heaven. The Pennsylvania couple’s one-off 1927 Mercedes-Benz Model K was chosen Best in Show at Sunday’s 25th Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, which returned to Roger Sherman Baldwin Park after a two-year hiatus.

“It came to us sort of by chance,” Michael says. “I was approached by somebody in the car world who said they had a neat car that I might be interested in. What really interested me was its Fleetwood body. Obviously, there are many coach builders, but it was from a place that’s only a half-hour down the road from us … a place I’d visited. I mean, the factory is still there. There’s a just a tremendous amount of history out of the Fleetwood factory. That’s what really attracted me to it—plus it’s the only one in existence.”

The car’s original owner, William Sloan of Rochester, New York, saw legendary Hollywood actor Rudolph Valentino’s Fleetwood-bodied Isotta Fraschini Roadster at the 1926 New York Auto Salon and fell in love with it. Except he wanted it on a Mercedes-Benz chassis. The car had been repainted in the decades that followed—Michael described it as “a pretty car with an ugly paint job”—and the Riches wanted to restore it back to how it looked when it rolled out of the Fleetwood factory. They entrusted the job to Steve Babinsky and Automotive Restorations in Lebabon, New Jersey.

“It was fun doing the restoration because we could visit it from time to time. I remember when it was down to a frame,” Joannie says. “We discussed the colors, and when we finally found the original color, we looked at each and said, ‘It’s interesting … not one I would pick.’ We sort of toyed back and forth about what we were going to do, and we decided if we were going to do it, we’d do it as it was.”

That proved to be a great decision. The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance is only its fourth public showing.

“The car world has a belief system, and the belief system is that certain cars are just super important, deserving of celebration and recognition,” says McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty, which owns the event. “The Mercedes-Benz Model K selected as best in show represents that greatness—one that the judges recognized following significant deliberation.”

The short-wheelbase (130 inches) Model K is powered by a 6.2-liter, switchable supercharged (kompressor) six-cylinder engine. From the right side of the bonnet/hood emerged three metal exhaust pipes merging at the lower edge to a single exhaust. This detail later became a hallmark of Mercedes-Benz supercharged cars.

“It’s a special car,” Joannie says. “I get so much enjoyment out of watching people’s reaction to it. They have so many questions. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Michael thanked his father “for getting me into this mess.”

“It’s a hobby,” Joannie jokingly corrected him.

“A mess, a hobby, organized chaos … I just wish he was here to see this.”

Something tells us he would be smiling.

I almost never post 2 at the same time but I felt they needed to go together. Plus vacation is over and it's back to work.

Founded in 1597 the state expedition Vasily Golovin and Ivan Voeikov as a fort to protect one of the most popular waterways in Siberia. In 1600, was set up customs, and walked through the city all the Siberian products. Construction of other roads were forbidden. The city was badly damaged by fire in 1674 and 1738 years, and its development has slowed.

After the 1917 revolution in first the Bolsheviks took power, and from September 1918 to July 1919 Verkhoturye was controlled by the army of Kolchak. In 1926 Verkhoturye lost city status, which he returned only in 1947, in connection with the 350th anniversary of its founding.

Verkhoturye is both the oldest and the most numerically small town in the Sverdlovsk region.

I found this male, white-tailed deer walking through the wooded area of an urban park. Around the same time, there were a couple coyotes in the same area. One walked very close to this guy, but they seemed to ignore each other, acting casually. However, I'm sure they were very aware of what was going on. Couldn't manage a photo of the encounter due to it being deeper into the wooded area and the constant movement of the critters. Oh well, I still have memories.

Found these in the yard, not good with mushrooms so have no idea what they are. A focus stack of 10 images.

----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)

16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)

Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

It wasn't the best of sunsets, but it was the best beach to be at for sunset, so I had fun trying to catch the beautiful colours. I failed miserably but this came close. There wasn't much flat wet sand to get reflections, so I took off my shoes, attached them to my camera bag and paddled at low tide . Much later I discovered my shoes weren't attached, and the thought of a half mile walk back to the cottage in bare feet , with resultant thistle punctures necessitated a mad dash to find them. Fortunately they hadn't drifted out to sea, so Lost and found , by Alabama 3 is perfect.

Found this beautiful bird whilst on one of our three land excursions whilst in Svalbard. Probably one of the coldest days we had and as you can see it started snowing which makes this image one of my all time favourites wildlife encounters.

ODC = Fences

Neither Kay or myself has any interest in the black Friday shopping crowds so it is our tradition to take our cameras and go as far away from all that as we can get and shop for photos:) Imagine our delight when we pulled over and walked to the beach to take photos and happened upon this fence of found flip flops proving once again to ourselves if you get out of the car and walk you never know what you will see that you would have otherwise driven right past.....this find is priceless!

Founded at a time when photography was only beginning to secure a foothold both in museum collections and in the art market at large, A Gallery for Fine Photography is a living landmark in the history of photography. Located in the Historic New Orleans French Quarter, A Gallery opened its doors in 1973, a world away from the cornerstones of the global contemporary art scene. Thanks to the staunchly independent vision of its founder, Joshua Mann Pailet, A Gallery has remained a haven for photography, from the earliest photographs to contemporary pieces. Over more than four decades in business, A Gallery for Fine Photography has established itself as one of the most respected photography galleries in America – one that has flourished despite an ever-changing art world by remaining true to itself and Pailet’s unique perspective.

Joshua Mann Pailet is a documentary photographer and gallerist who has been one of the most significant figures of the photography community in his native New Orleans for forty-five years.

(that pink blob is Fannie taking a nap)

found in the abandoned Berghotel Deluxe in Germany. (2014)

This an attempt to use overlay to make a point......I am a WIP artist or photographer, but having a blast, so that's what counts.

In a way my photo's will always be part of my journey and thoughts....................

Pictures from a found film!

I got a green coloured roll of Kodak Tri-X 120. This film was produced in the late '80's and early '90's of the previous century. I used semi-stand development with Rodinal 1:100 (inversions first 30 seconds, 2 inversions halfway, total 60 minutes).

There were ten negatives size 6x7. Someone traveled to Turkey to photograph steam locomotives with an expensive camera. Cameras that shot in format 6x7 were expensive back then. Examples are Mamiya 7, Mamiya RZ67/RB67, Pentax 67 etc.

SO WHY WOULD SOMEONE GO TO TURKEY TO PHOTOGRAPH STEAM LOCOMOTIVES WITH CLEARLY AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA AND NOT DEVELOP THE FILM? I just wonder….

This locomotive, nr. 46052, was built in Germany in 1937 and was used in Turkey till the late '80's and maybe the early '90's. Weight is about 104 tons. 1900HP.

a determined white-breasted nuthatch scoured every inch of a burr oak tree

Here is another recent capture that I let hang around for a while. I found these examples of the good and lasting work of rain and iron oxide. Clearly, this was another day without clouding on my probable circuitous way back from a CostCo trip. I kept the sky minimized. These old rust heaps were enough to catch my attention near Teller farm on Valmont Road back to Frogmont. BoCo's White Rock open space is on the hill, left, while farming continues in the valley.

Actually, today, there are no skies nor clouds, only blank skies - and disgusting pictures. even on this summer's day. This is probably more than a make-believe farm because it looks like activity exists around training horses and riders. This prize came about after I got control of some visual distraction problems. It's interesting that they still have a farm here at all while there are prairie castles and housing all about. It's easier to grow castles around here than anything agriculture while petroleum is more important than water and food. That's a balance sheet that is already unbalanced in this fascist administration whose outgoing project trying to sell ANWAR to the highest bidders..

eDDie usually finds the barns for agricultural collections. I have passed this place any number of times. Earlier, The local weather alway says wait a few days, wait a few days for any skies. We have lately been in a maximum cheat zone. We've already waited weeks and weeks and weeks. Are we done yet?
