I stopped by to revisit a couple of old gas pumps even though I knew that they hadn't changed since my previous visit. I placed the nozzle on the ground for this shot, after I was done I picked it back up and placed it back where it belonged. What did it really matter where I left it? Why did I bother? The futility of the act struck me as rather odd, the pump has not worked since gas was 49 cents a gallon. Maybe I was just taught to leave things the way I found them.

Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York City, and his wife Chirlane McCray march during the climate strike. People across the U.S. left their homes, workplaces, and schools for a youth-led Global Climate Strike. They marched and rallied to demand transformative action to address the climate crisis, and called on leaders to choose to side with young people, not fossil fuel executives polluting the planet for profit.

The September 20-27 global week of action is the beginning of a reckoning for the fossil fuel industry that will launch a growing movement of millions of people through the 2020 election toward a more just, green, and peaceful future for all.

Poland plans to construct 11 300 megawatt capacity for coal-fired electricity production. The plant in Turow, near the German border, is one of the ageing plants where new capacities are planned.

 

The development of renewable energy sources will sidelined by these investments. Poland will be locked into a carbon-intensive energy system for the next 40-50 years - to the detriment of people in Poland and the global climate.

ANACORTES, WASHINGTON, USA -- Friday May 13th, 2016. Activists set up a blockade encampment on the train tracks leading to the oil refineries in Anacortes. Thousands of people began converging in Anacortes, WA, as part of the global climate mobilization Break Free. Many are now risking arrest by engaging in peaceful civil disobedience to highlight the moral urgency of immediate action to combat climate change. Anacortes is home to two fossil fuel refineries owned by Shell and Tesoro. These refineries are the largest unaddressed source of carbon pollution in the Northwest and they refine 47% of all the gas and diesel used in the region. Break Free Pacific Northwest events will continue throughout the weekend.

 

Break Free 2016 is a week of coordinated direct actions that target the most dangerous fossil fuel projects, in an effort to keep coal, oil and gas in the ground and accelerate a just transition to 100% renewable energy. Thousands of people all over the planet are putting their bodies on the line to send a message to polluters and politicians that we need to break free from fossil fuels now.

In 2000, during an attempt by the Russians to corner the palladium market, which increased the price of palladium from $100 per Troy ounce to over $1,000 per Troy ounce in less than 6 months, Engelhard Corporation (EC) decided to build an onshore facility to provide a recyclable product as a feed for its Seneca, SC, hydrometallurgical processing plant for it to stay profitable. Representatives from EC asked scientists from ARC’s Thermal Treatment Technologies Division if they were capable of developing a process to convert spent catalytic materials from the petroleum and transportation industries into a recyclable metallic product. Lengthy negotiations resulted in a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between Engelhard and ARC.

 

Engelhard’s goals for the project were that 1) the recovery of the precious metals be greater than 93 percent, 2) the product be an appropriate feed form (i.e., finely divided) for the EC proprietary hydrometallurgical process that results in individual precious metals as products, 3) the process be scalable with enough engineering data to design and build the plant in Seneca, and 4) the process be of a sufficient scale that the EC could send its own crew to be trained in the performance of this process.

 

Over the next 18 months, a pyrometallurgical process was developed that yielded over $15 million in recovered precious metals. A practical granulation system was developed that produced a product suitable for EC’s in-house process. A plant was designed and built and is currently operated by EC in Seneca. Because of its success, the plant is now undergoing a doubling of its capacity.

WELLS FARGO DIVEST! A 'Block Party' on Wells Fargo's doorstep

6 Climate Activists were arrested, cited and released on Friday as part of an action to demand a stop to the bank’s reckless funding of fossil fuels. Activists locked down in front of Wells Fargo's security gates, blocking the entrance and forcing the branch to close.

 

Outside, many local climate groups came together with live music, street theater, wheat paste and to paint a giant mural reading "WELLS FARGO--HEAT, FLOODS, FIRE--DIVEST FROM OIL & GAS".

Postdoctoral research associate Arnab Roy works in NETL’s High-Pressure Combustion Facility and uses data from the Energy Systems Innovation Lab to design next-generation water-cooled rotating detonation combustors for land-based power generation applications. Roy also works with fuel cells, coal gasification, and gas turbines, with an emphasis on investigating thermal management strategies to improve performance and efficiency. He came to NETL to help develop transformational technologies using state-of-the-art research facilities alongside renowned scientists and engineers.

ANACORTES, WASHINGTON-- On Saturday, May 14, 2016, activists began their second day blockading the train tracks leading to the oil refineries in Anacortes. The activists slept overnight at the encampment on the train tracks as part of the Break Free actions happening around the world.

The Wabash River Coal Gasification Repowering Project is one of two demonstrations of advanced integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology in the United States. It was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in September of 1991 as a Round IV Demonstration Project for the Clean Coal Technology (CCT) Program. The IGCC plant is a repowering facility in the sense that it was built to replace a dated conventional pulverized coal power plant. Construction began in July of 1993 near West Terre Haute, Indiana, followed by operational startup in November of 1995. The project demonstration phase was completed and turned over for commercial operation in December 1999. In 2005, the plant was re-started under new management. sgSolutions LLC (SGS) owns and operates the Syngas Plant, whereas Wabash Valley Power owns the power generation portion of the plant, which is operated by Duke Energy.

Refinery Corridor Healing Walk #3

 

Benicia to Rodeo, California June 11, 2017 - 3rd of 4 walks this year along the Refinery Corridor in the East Bay. Organized by Idle No More SF Bay, this 10.5 mile walk started in Benicia, home of Valero's Benicia Refinery, crossed the Carquinez Bridge and then passed thru the heart of Conoco-Phillips 66 “San Francisco” refinery.

 

Within minutes of the early morning start, walkers had the extremely rare opportunity to observe 2 Bald Eagles fishing and hanging out along the bay. And then, almost as if scripted, what started as a bright, sunny day turned increasingly windy and as the walkers approached the Conoco-Phillips 66 refinery, dark, menacing clouds formed, complete with lightning and eventually rain.

 

These walks have been bringing native people, local communities and those concerned about the health of the planet together to envision a healthier future, since 2014.

 

The next walk (July 16, 2017) will cover the section of the Refinery Corridor from Rodeo to the Chevron Richmond refinery. It will be the very last of a total of 16 walks that have happened over a period of 4 years.

 

These walks have done an outstanding job of connecting communities and issues and providing insights and ways to connect to the fierce battles being waged in our own back yards for "Clean Air, Water & Soil

June 24 2016: The Clean Energy Revolution marchers advocated an immediate ban on fracking, ending the use of fossil fuels, stopping the use of all dirty energy sources, a transition to 100% renewables and environmental justice for all.

Photo labels provide information about what the image shows and where it was made. The label may describe the type of infrastructure pictured, the environment the photo captures, or the type of operations pictured. For many images, labels also provide site-specific information, including operators and facility names, if it is known by the photographer.

 

All photo labels include location information, at the state and county levels, and at township/village levels if it is helpful. Please make use of the geolocation data we provide - especially helpful if you want to see other imagery made nearby!

 

We encourage you to reach out to us about any imagery you wish to make use of, so that we can assist you in finding the best snapshots for your purposes, and so we can further explain these specific details to help you understand the imagery and fully describe it for your own purposes.
