The skies over China have darkened in the past five decades thanks to a nine-fold increase fossil-fuel emissions. In this image, a thick plume of smog makes its way across the Yellow Sea towards Korea. NOx, which is released when fossil fuels are burned, contributes to the formation of smog. In addition, NOx can be redeposited to surface waters through a process known as atmospheric deposition.

Joe Yip, a researcher in the Office of Research and Development at the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, utilizes laser-based Rayleigh light scattering to measure flame density and speed over a flat flame burner. Oxy-fuel combustion, using oxygen in place of air with diluents such as steam or carbon dioxide, can reduce pollutant emissions in advanced power cycles using gas turbines. To support the development of oxy-fuel power systems, NETL is measuring laminar flame speeds for relevant oxy-fuel-diluent mixtures for which prior data is scarce.

ANACORTES, WASHINGTON, USA -- Friday May 13th, 2016. Activists set up a blockade encampment on the train tracks leading to the oil refineries in Anacortes. Thousands of people began converging in Anacortes, WA, as part of the global climate mobilization Break Free. Many are now risking arrest by engaging in peaceful civil disobedience to highlight the moral urgency of immediate action to combat climate change. Anacortes is home to two fossil fuel refineries owned by Shell and Tesoro. These refineries are the largest unaddressed source of carbon pollution in the Northwest and they refine 47% of all the gas and diesel used in the region. Break Free Pacific Northwest events will continue throughout the weekend.

 

Break Free 2016 is a week of coordinated direct actions that target the most dangerous fossil fuel projects, in an effort to keep coal, oil and gas in the ground and accelerate a just transition to 100% renewable energy. Thousands of people all over the planet are putting their bodies on the line to send a message to polluters and politicians that we need to break free from fossil fuels now.

It may be in the form of a single metal oxide, such as an oxide of copper, nickel, or iron, or a metal oxide supported on a high-surface-area substrate (e.g., alumina or silica), which do not take part in the reactions. For a typical CLC process, combustion is split into separate reduction and oxidation reactions in multiple reactors. The metal oxide supplies oxygen for combustion and is reduced by the fuel in the fuel reactor, which is operated at elevated temperature. Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is considered a “transformational” technology with the potential to meet program cost and performance goals.

Today the Illawarra Knitting Nannas Against Gas visited Malcolm Turnbull's Edgecliff office. He was not there and had not answered the two simple questions the Nannas had left him earlier.

 

1. Do you support a ban on CSG mining in drinking water catchments?

2. Would you move Federal legislation to enact a ban on CSG mining in drinking water catchments?

 

Though the Nannas staged a peaceful knit in, his staff did feel it necessary to call the police.

Washington DC, November 15 2016. A diverse crowd of around three thousand fired up activists variously affiliated with over a hundred different groups gathered in front of offices occupied by the Army Corps Of Engineers (and other agencies including the GAO...) for a rally and march to protect the midwestern plains water and land that rightfully belongs in perpetuity to Native American people. A core group of speakers travelled here from the Dakotas to lead the action. There is some slim hope that President Obama can be persuaded in the waning days of his presidency to refuse 'right of way' on Federal lands for the Dakota Access Pipeline. There was a sad, poignant vibe to the event because the DAPL poisonous snake will almost certainly be 'fast tracked' by the incoming Trump administration. President Elect Donald J. Trump is an investor in the pipeline. The company largely responsible for the pipeline project is headed by a very rich Texan folk music enthusiast/opportunist/OK guitar player who seems to have little understanding of what most folk musicians are trying to express.
