Demonstrators went to the streets at the nation's capital to protest in front of the White House, calling on the decision makers in Washington DC to support the transition to renewable energy instead of coal, oil and gas energy.
Break Free 2016 is a week of coordinated direct actions that target the most dangerous fossil fuel projects, in an effort to keep coal, oil and gas in the ground and accelerate a just transition to 100% renewable energy. Thousands of people all over the planet are putting their bodies on the line to send a message to polluters and politicians that we need to break free from fossil fuels now.

NIGER DELTA, NIGERIA -- Tuesday, May 10th, 2016. A Break Free Nigeria action is held at Oloibiri Well 1. Nigeria's first oil well was set up in 1956 in Oloibiri and it was abandoned in 1978; the community however continues to pay hefty pollution costs. Neighboring areas where drilling for oil is ongoing continue to experience constant oil spills and gas flares.

Oakland, CA - On October 23rd, ninety-two of the world's largest banks met in São Paulo, Brazil to vote on a policy that upholds Indigenous people's right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) to allow or disallow projects on their lands. Local activists and environmental allies protested against three of the banks involved with the financing of dirty fossil fuel projects (like the Dakota Access Pipeline and Keystone XL). The day started off with a prayer circle, followed by three divestment actions at Wells Fargo, Citibank, and JPMorgan Chase. This action was part of a global divestment movement, where over 50 actions were held across the world.

Minnesotans and allied organizations gathered at Governor Tim Walz’s office in the State Capitol to urge him and his administration to stop the Enbridge Line 3 tar sands pipeline with petition signatures from across Minnesota. Greenpeace, together with MN350, Sierra Club North Star Chapter, Honor the Earth, Environment Minnesota, Daily Kos, and CREDO Action presented signatures from Minnesotans urging Walz and his administration to respect Indigenous treaty rights and protect the land, water, wild rice, and climate from the threats posed by Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline project.

Hazardous materials responders were on the scene of an oil pipeline rupture along the Alameda County-San Joaquin County border near Tracy, California May 24, 2016, cleaning up a spill reported to be as much as 21,000 gallons. The leak in the underground pipe, which was reported by Shell Pipeline Co. after a line between Coalinga (Fresno County) and Martinez lost pressure, was spilling crude oil into the soil but was not near any waterways where the problem would escalate. The oil release was visible on the ground in a 250-by-40-foot section, San Joaquin County officials said.
Greenpeace USA climbers form a blockade on the Fred Hartman Bridge in Baytown, Texas shutting down the largest fossil fuel thoroughfare in the United States ahead of the third Democratic primary debate in nearby Houston. The climbers are preventing the transport of all oil and gas through the Houston Ship Channel, home to the largest petrochemical complex in the United States. Their action is a call to the country’s present and future leaders to imagine a world beyond fossil fuels and embrace a just transition to renewable energy.

As leaders of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry gathered at the 3rd Annual LNG Forum being held in Houston, a collection of residents, activists, and environmentalists took to the street and projected images in protest of the event.
The LNG forum takes place during the 1-year anniversary of Storm Uri, which caused the 2021 Texas Power Crisis–the largest energy infrastructure failure in the state's history. The failure led to state-wide shortages of water, food, power, and heat and the untimely death of over 240 people.
Surfrider and Greenpeace volunteers sort through debris picked up on the beach. The Surfrider Foundation and Greenpeace team up to organize a volunteer beach clean up on South Beach in Miami. The clean up came as the Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise Atlantic Coast Ship tour wraps up it's final leg.

As the pandemic drags on, some residents of the Bay Area faced a different kind of health emergency on February 9th: an oil spill. Around 600 gallons of an oil-and-water mixture spilled from a Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, California into the San Francisco Bay, the company told local health authorities.
The incident triggered a Level 2 health advisory from the local health department for residents of three surrounding communities, which was lifted later in the evening. Other agencies said that they are continuing the investigation, especially watching for any impacts the spill might have on wildlife.
Richmond is predominantly Black and Latino, groups often exposed to higher levels of pollution, and as a result, face more health problems. Refineries like Chevron’s have historically been sited in communities of color, while other historic injustices such as redlining have locked in still more negative public health impacts today.

The purpose of the gathering is to strengthen on-water resistance to Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. The Greenpeace Ship Arctic Sunrise visits Anacortes and displays a "No Supertanker Highway" message for the oil refinery and the tankers at the facility. The ship is on a tour following the route that would experience a seven-fold increase in tar sands tanker oil traffic if the pipeline expansion is completed. The report documents the communities threatened by the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, which would worsen the effects of global warming, risk poisoning water, jeopardize the hundreds of thousands of jobs that depend on clean coasts, violate Indigenous sovereignty, and threaten the extinction of the Southern Resident Orca Whale, of which only 75 remain.

They marched and rallied to demand transformative action to address the climate crisis, and called on leaders to choose to side with young people, not fossil fuel executives polluting the planet for profit.
The September 20-27 global week of action is the beginning of a reckoning for the fossil fuel industry that will launch a growing movement of millions of people through the 2020 election toward a more just, green, and peaceful future for all.

Resist the Pipeline
Activists from across Washington and Oregon take action by land and sea to protect our waters, our communities, and our climate from Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. A rally and march on land and a flotilla of kayaks and canoes swarming Kinder Morgan’s marine terminal from the water. Participating organizations in the Stop Kinder Morgan Action Council include: 350 Seattle, 350 Tacoma, Mosquito Fleet, Protectors of the Salish Sea, Students for the Salish Sea, Greenpeace USA, Sierra Club Washington Chapter, and Stand.earth.

As the pandemic drags on, some residents of the Bay Area faced a different kind of health emergency on February 9th: an oil spill. Around 600 gallons of an oil-and-water mixture spilled from a Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, California into the San Francisco Bay, the company told local health authorities.

In response, people gathered at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, DC, to demand the party reverse its stance and provide a forum for presidential hopefuls to debate one of the greatest threats facing humanity today. Over half the Democratic field has already endorsed the call for a climate debate. Organizers delivered more than 200,000 petition signatures from people across the country asking the DNC to listen to voters and organize a debate. The signatures were collected by CREDO Action, Greenpeace USA, Climate Hawks Vote, Oil Change U.S., Daily Kos, Friends of the Earth Action, Public Citizen, Endangered Species Coalition, People Demanding Action, CPD Action, Women's March National, Bold Nebraska, Bold Alliance, Amazon Watch, 350 Action, Sunrise Movement, Food & Water Action, NextGen America, US Youth Climate Strike, and MoveOn.

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN- On September 8, 2018, tens of thousands of people joined over 830 actions in 91 countries under the banner of Rise for Climate to demonstrate the urgency of the climate crisis. Communities around the world shined a spotlight on the increasing impacts they are experiencing and demanded local action to keep fossil fuels in the ground. There were hundreds of creative events and actions that challenged fossil fuels and called for a swift and just transition to 100% renewable energy for all. Event organizers emphasized community-led solutions, starting in places most impacted by pollution and climate change.
