The most ancient fuel. Actually renewable, even if not indefinitely available, with a lower "energy density" than oil, but wood was the main energy source for humans until 2 centuries ago.
No doubt that the use of fossile fuel resulted in a sudden industrial developement of our economy, but we may also remember that today the energy conversion and use is more effective. Using a ton of wood in present day may let us do more things than our grand parents did.
The more, we know that managing one fire is easier than managing more. If I had to choose a way to heat my house, produce electric power and manage it, I'd for sure try to create a biomass fed power plant close to home, then use electric power and heat.
Which is the problem with this today in Italy? We are not cutting woods. We have more than two times the woods we had 50 years ago and we are not "using" it. I know that our forests would never be enough to heat the whole of Italy and to produce enough electric power, but "something is something and nothing is nothing" (typical friulian phrase).
