The Smithsonian museum of Natural History was a little too new-fangled for us (so many screens and flashing things!!) but we did find our way to a musty older room filled with fossils.

Southern coast of the Isle of Wight viewed from the fossil forest at the foot of Hanover Point. The rock in the foreground is full of fossilised plant material, and as I was taking this picture, Jeannie found a nice piece of petrified wood, filled with crystals of iron pyrite.

I thought this was a fossil for about 30 seconds until I realized it was the spiraled rebar impression in concrete.

One of the multitudes of leaves making up the fossil wall. This one is so well preserved you can see insect damage on it.
Unbelievable colours adorns this massive rock face which overlooks Coral Creek. Over years of erosion one particular layer is freckled with hubcap size circles which appear to be fossils.

Fossil Bird Wing from an unidentified species. It lived during Eocene time, 52 million years ago. This fossil is preserved in the Green River Formation, a laminated limestone precipitated from calcium-rich waters. The limestone is interbedded with many thin layers of volcanic ash and mudstone. Fossil Butte National Monument. Near Kemmerer, Lincoln Co., Wyo.
