Another rock has appeared from the rock fall at Ayrmer Cove and this has a number of fossils visible. These are from the meadfoot period and estimated to be between 393 and 411 million years ago. A 50p coin is there for size.

Visited some remarkable fossils at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. About 240 million years old. I wonder what people/aliens in the far future will know about us. Actually ceramic toilet bowls are supposed to have amazing staying power measured in eons or kalpas.
The John Day Fossil Beds are some of the most productive and best preserved Late Eocene-Late Miocene (45-5 mya) fossil deposits in the entire World, preserving a vast period where giant mammals and angiosperms thrived in lushly forested ancient Oregon. Excavations dating as far back as 1864 and the the richest fossil areas were preserved as a National Monument in 1975. These ended up as three widely separated units: Clarno, Sheep Rock and Painted Hills, and was named for the John Day River that runs through past all of them.
The Clarno area contains the oldest fossil deposits in the John Day Fossil Beds, dating back to 54 million years ago when the Clarno Volcanoes were active, periodically erupting over the next 9 million years and creating massive lahar flows that descended over the sides of the volcanoes, picking up plants and some animals of the Late Eocene. Since then the Clarno Volcanoes had eroded away, leaving only the remnant lahars , now known as the Palisades.
