Hipstamatic only.

Having spent a sleepless night screwed up in the back of a Ford Focus because all accommodation on the island was full due to a folk music festival I crawled out at dawn to be met with this scene. I had arrived in the dark and had no idea what would be near my car in the morning.

For the Smile on Saturday challenge: Kings and Queens.

A marriage of state is a diplomatic marriage or union between two members of different nation-states or internally, between two power blocs, usually in authoritarian societies and is a practice which dates back to ancient times, as far back as early Grecian cultures in western society, and of similar antiquity in other civilizations. A Marriage of State often involved surrendering a female member of a ruling line to gain peace or shore up alliances of state between nation-states headed by small oligarchies or acknowledged royalty. -- Courtesy Wikipedia

I am reading a book called Isaac's Storm right now about the 1900 hurricane which all but destroyed Galveston, Texas and claimed somewhere between 6000 to 12,000 lives (tallies varied and many bodies were never recovered but the official number was recorded at 8000 lost lives). One of the most salient details from the book came in the course of talking about how strong the winds became during the storm. Most estimates peg the strongest sustained winds at about 150 mph, with gusts up to 200 mph. This did a number of things. First, it literally tore homes apart. It raked shingles off of rooftops and spun them through the air decapitating people and horses alike. As horrific as that image is, the most frightening aspect as recorded by multiple survivors was that the storm blew the ocean perfectly flat. It literally planed the surface of the water smooth with the ferocity of the wind. Imagine that. Being in a storm of such furious intensity you can barely keep your eyes open, nor can you hear anything above the constant roar. Debris is flying everywhere, homes being ripped open, bricks carried by the wind horizontally like shot cannon ball and in the midst of this apocalypse an ocean devoid of waves, planed flat by the wind, with only the broken remnants of the city belying the murderous intent of the furious ocean.

So yeah, I have the ocean on my mind tonight while I go curl up on the couch and finish the account of the disaster while a much calmer (but certainly not a calm) wind rushes and moans outside. I have a healthy fascination for stormy oceans much like many other people, but I pray I never face anything like that.
