Der Mummelsee ist ein Karsee im Schwarzwald. Er ist 3,7 Hektar groß, 17 Meter tief, einen Umfang von etwa 800 Metern, und liegt auf 1028,5 m ü. NN.
Er befindet sich in der Gemeinde Seebach in der Nähe von Achern im nördlichen (mittigen) Schwarzwald.en.
Grimmelshausen ließ seinen Simplicissimus von Unterwasserbewohnern in den Mummelsee entführen und zum Mittelpunkt der Erde tauchen.
Das dabei geschilderte System von Wasserverbindungen von der Erdoberfläche zum Mittelpunkt der Erde könnte durch den Platonischen Mythos über das Schicksal der Seele nach ihrem Tode inspiriert worden sein (Dialog Phaidon 107d–115a).
Die Hornisgrinde ist mit 1163 m ü. NHN der höchste Berg des Nordschwarzwaldes. Sie ist ein langgestreckter Bergrücken mit einer Länge von rund zwei Kilometern und liegt ungefähr in Nord-Süd-Ausrichtung.
Militärische Nutzung
Ein alter Hangar steht noch unter dem Aussichtsturm
Im Jahr 1938 wurde der gesamte südliche Bereich der Gipfelebene zum militärischen Sperrgebiet erklärt. --> Ab 1942 von der Deutschen Luftwaffe als Flugabwehrstellung genutzt, übernahmen 1945 die französischen Luftstreitkräfte den Standort. Diese betrieben auf der Hornisgrinde eine Abhörstation im Auftrag des französischen Auslandsgeheimdienstes SDECE bzw. DGSE. Später wurde der Standort parallel auch von der Bundeswehr und der Nato genutzt. Nachdem die Anlage 1994 außer Betrieb ging und dann mehrere Jahre lang brach lag, wurde das Sperrgebiet 1997 freigegeben..
Im Westen wird der Abhang in etwa 900 bis 1000 m Höhe durch die Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B 500) durchschnitten.

Sehr bleibt bei bikern ist die Schwarzwaldhochstrasse, die B 500; ideal zum Cruisen.
Die Schwarzwaldhochstraße im Nordschwarzwald von Baden-Baden bis Freudenstadt und die zwei Abschnitte im Südschwarzwald von Triberg bis Waldshut, diese bilden heute die B 500. Der westliche Abschnitt vom Rhein nach Baden-Baden kam erst in den siebziger Jahren dazu.

Grinden und Hochmoor

Hornisgrinde mit typischer Moorvegetation und verkrüppelten, kleinwüchsigen Nadelgehölzen
Die Grinden, baumlose Feuchtheiden auf der Hochfläche, entstanden nach der Rodung des Waldes und der anschließenden Nutzung als Weidefläche ab dem 15. Jahrhundert. Dagegen ist das bis zu fünf Meter starke Hochmoor im südöstlichen Bereich des Gipfelplateaus von Natur aus unbewaldet. Es wird angenommen, dass es mindestens 6.000 Jahre alt ist.
Eine andere Deutung des Namens ist aus den Begriffen Horn, miss und grind abgeleitet und bedeutet so viel wie kahler Bergrücken, der auf seiner Höhe ein Moor trägt.
