On March 31, 1913, Faisanterie Buitenlust, the forerunner of the current modern animal park Burgers' Zoo, opens its doors to the public for the first time. Since its foundation by Johan Burgers, the first owner and the one who named the animal park in Arnhem, the park has always remained a real family business.
Already from its inception the zoo caused a sensation due to its daring new organisation, which naturally is in the way the animals' accommodations are shaped as well as in the way the experiences for the visitors are created. Burgers' Zoo has a rich history, which has shaped the zoo into the way it is today, and as you can still find it now in the wooded area just north of Arnhem

History

Historical marker for the University of Dixie, the forerunner of Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee. The plaque reads:
“Dixie College - This quadrangle was part of the grounds of the University of Dixie, commonly called "Dixie College," chartered 18 November 1909. Jere Whitson and other Cookeville citizens led the drive for the college; Whitson donated twelve acres for the institution. Construction began 16 May 1911. In September, 1912, high school and junior college classes began in a building where Derryberry Hall now stands. In 1915 the Dixie Board ceded its property to the State to endow the present University.”
The Original chapel of St. Lawrence at Sinquerim, the forerunner of the present church was founded in 1630 by the then viceroy Dom MInguel de Noronha, the fourth Count of Linhares. From its modest beginnings as an ermida(built either in 1630 or 1633), meant for a handful of poor fisher folk, it now became a Church. In 1636 he granted it to the Franciscans a few weeks before leaving Goa at the end of his term. St. Lawrence Church was apart of the Aguada fortress, water reservoir and the lighthouse. It stood as a silent witness to the ups and downs in the political, military and economic history of the Portuguese in India

The people in this moment could be anybody, or perhaps they are modeled on specific persons the artist saw while outlining the composition and beginning the layering process of applying the oils to the canvas. Supposing that the people are specific characters, rather than made-up models, the 100 or more years and two world wars, massive city reconstruction efforts, and the changes to street scenes due to personal transportation by car or light rail and buses means that no trace of those people remains; possibly a 2nd or 3rd generation of descendant has passed the Cathedral of Notre Dame in recent times, but otherwise, no, this moment in time was something similar to a snapshot; a brief intersection of passing clouds, workers making steam billow up from the river, horse and cart paused at the curb, and a few passers-by on the sidewalk.
