Sri Lankan Envoy Presents Credentials

Sri Lanka’s new Ambassador Abdul Ajeed Mohammed Marleen presented his credentials to Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal on Wednesday.

Yesterday, he visited Sri Lankan International School in Jeddah and talked to teachers and students. He was given a red carpet welcome as he walked into the school premises with the school band playing. Students of the primary section greeted the new envoy with a garland.

Principal Fareeda H. Wahab and Azmy Anverdeen, chairman of the school board of management, outlined the activities of the school. Pledging his fullest support to the progress of the school, Marleen said he would give a free hand to the principal and the board of management of the institution to run the institution in an independent and efficient manner. He said the parents, teachers and the diplomatic mission should work as a team for the betterment of the student community. He appreciated the fact that the school had earned a name for its outstanding achievements in the academic field.

Praising the efforts of the principal toward the progress of the school, Marleen said that he knew the achievements she had made at the Colombo-based Muslim Ladies College. “I am sure, the school will march ahead under her leadership,” the ambassador said.

He thanked the Kingdom for allowing foreign students to pursue education in their own cultural environment.

The ambassador also visited the Sri Lankan Consulate where Consul General Abdul Latiff Mohammed Lafeer received him. Marleen addressed the members of the mission and outlined the plans he had in mind for the improvement in working of the missions. He also attended a community dinner.

He visited Madinah and held a meeting with Sri Lankan Expatriates Society.

Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles is sounding the alarm about reports of foreign seeds being shipped unsolicited to Kentuckians across the Commonwealth. Kentucky is the fourth known state to receive suspicious packages of seeds that appear to have originated from China.

Individuals who have received suspicious packages with seeds should put them in an airtight bag and contact the Kentucky Department of Agriculture at (502) 573-0282 or e-mail ag.web@ky.gov.

It was not common for "foreign power" to lead Conrail trains on the Fort Wayne Line because the route had a cab signal system east of Alliance, Ohio. Yet here is a westbound coming through Orrville, Ohio, with a bright red CN leader. My notes from that era indicated that the train went by symbol GTCO. I was not able to find a GT symbol for Conrail, but I did find that the railroad had a LTCO, which originated at Goodman Yard in Lordstown, Ohio. Perhaps the crew called it GT to reflect the yard where it originated. The train would have still operated over a small piece of cab signal territory on the Fort Wayne Line in Alliance, where the Lordstown Secondary diverged. (Scanned from color negative film)

The foreign policy and national security choices of a country are often critical and have a strong impact on global perceptions of the country and also on its ties with other nations and international organizations. In his new book, “Choices: Inside the Making of India’s Foreign Policy” (Brookings Institution Press, 2016), Shivshankar Menon, distinguished fellow at The Brookings Institution and former Indian national security advisor, provides an insider’s perspective on some of the most crucial decisions Indian policymakers have faced, including on the U.S.-India nuclear agreement, next steps in the India-China relationship, as well as the response to the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

On October 7, The India Project at Brookings hosted a panel discussion to launch Shivshankar Menon’s new book. Former U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns and Menon discussed some of the major foreign policy choices he outlines in the book, and what they reveal about India’s strategic culture and decision-making, its policies toward the use of force, its long-term goals and priorities, and its future behavior. Brookings President Strobe Talbott provided introductory remarks, and Tanvi Madan, fellow and director of The India Project, moderated the discussion.
