I was barely able to squeeze off this final shot before my battery died. Going by farm after farm throughout northern Montana, I kept looking for the perfect barn and the right kinda clouds over golden fields of wheat. And then, once I finally found it, I looked at the power left on the Nikon and it was scary-low! I held my breath and ran out into the field, hoping to hear that satisfying little click!
After I was back in the car, I clicked the preview button to see what I had shot, and it did not even come up... then I spent the next few hours wondering if this one even made it to the old memory card!

CSXT train L022's pair of classic EMD SD40-2s 8840 and 8128 (blt. Oct. 1978 as Conrail 6465 and Aug. 1980 as Clinchfield 8128 respectively) are seen just clear of Union Turnpike / NY Route 66 crossing at MP QCV2.1 on the Claverack Industrial Track. They are just wrapping up their work after making the second of two trips up heading light engine to the big ADM flour mill at the end of the line and will soon be headed light through down and down the steep hill to to CSXT's yard beside Amtrak's Hudson Line.
This two and half mile long spur off the Hudson Line main is actually former Boston and Albany trackage having been built in 1838 as the Hudson and Berkshire Railroad. It was sold at foreclosure to the Western Railroad of Massachusetts in 1854 and became part of the new Boston and Albany system in 1870. At its peak in the 1880s the line hosted four round trip passenger trains and a northbound mixed train every day. After passenger service ended in 1933 the 17 miles between Hudson and Chatham was sustained largely by cement traffic moving east to Boston, but in 1959 the line was severed east of Claverack and abandoned through Mellenville and Ghent (via the Upper Harlem Line) to Chatham where it met the B&A mainline. Another mile and half from the feed mill in the center of Claverack was removed in the early 1980s after the coming of Conrail leaving only what survives today.
For a tiny branch this line offers superlative photo opportunities including the historic Upper Hudson depot, trackage thru the town square, street running down South 7th Avenue, and this insane 3.22% grade up from the yard along the Hudson Line that during the Conrail era was the steepest on the entirety of the railroad! And while Hudson is a cool railfan location it's an even cooler town to visit in just its own right if you like good food, good beer, art, antiques, history, and beautiful scenery.

Foreclosure quilt series, map of a Detroit neighborhood. Most of the red areas are now empty lots. Many homes have been razed because they were abandoned and left uncared for.
1360 Merriam Avenue, located at the corner of West 170th Street in the Highbridge neighborhood in the South Bronx, New York City, was built about 1926.
It is, unusual for New York City, a Mission Revival style building. Despite its well maintained condition today (2015), this building was abandoned and in City ownership in the 1980s, one of many buildings in this area that went through In Rem foreclosure.
The City of New York transferred this and several other properties to the Highbridge Community Development Corporation (HCDC), which rehabilitated this and other buildings.

Wall Street, the economy, government gridlock, extremism, and simple greed have all led to the problems Americans face right now. Part of the fallout has affected one of the prime tenets of the American Dream: owning your own home. Foreclosures are at a record high and many of them are due to mismanagement and overly lax requirements for a mortgage. No one was governing while unscrupulous banks and mortgage companies issued papers to people who could not afford to buy into this part of the American Dream. All for the sake of money.
As one example, take a look at this 60 Minutes exposé of mortgage mismanagement: The Next Housing Shock.
