After discovering that the battery in a pack of long expired SX-70 film was dead, I used a pair of forceps to remove a good battery from an newer, empty film pack. Using the old battery as a guide for the new battery, I was able to use the expired film after all. Well, attempt to use … unfortunately, all of the chemical pods in the film were toast and the sheets were stuck together into a instant photo brick.

I almost didn't bother collecting this specimen recalling the amount of effort involved in working my way through the Elliot and Humpesch key (Ref 1) the last time I picked one of these up! Nevertheless I thought it would make a nice break from stoneflies and so I decided to give it a go.
In fact this one turned out to be even more demanding, as this specimen is a subimago rather than a full adult, and so its legs and genitalia (amongst other things) are not fully formed. Although the key is specifically for adult Ephemeroptera, it does include some useful information for subimagines - including wing markings in some cases.
All photos were taken using the integral camera on my SX10D microscope. Photo 1 shows one of the forewings (10x mag.) and one of the hindwings (20x mag.). Photo 2 gives ventral views of the tip of the abdomen showing the forceps and the penis lobes: the shot on the left illustrates the "as found" condition, whereas in the second shot the forceps-base has been pulled back in order to reveal more of the underlying structure.
As the family key included in Ref 1 covers both adults and subimagines, the specimen was fairly easily identified as a member of the Heptageniidae group, the main features being the presence of fully developed hindwings, two long caudal filaments, hind tarsi with five free segments and certain details of the forewing venation.
Although the Ref 1 species key is specifically for adults, the genus of this subimago can be identified with reasonable confidence as Ecdyonurus, the critical feature being the general shape of the penis lobes. Once the presence of teeth on the forceps-base is factored in then this reduces the options to either E. dispar or E. torrentis. Thankfully, the wing markings for both of these species in the subimago state are included in the key, and it can be seen from Figure 22 C that the species can only be Ecdyonurus torrentis.

Small mammals such as white-footed mice are an important host to nymphal black-legged ticks. These mammals are also reservoirs of tick-borne disease, including Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis. Therefore, surveys of small mammals can provide informative counts and phenology of ticks in an area. NYS IPM staff was fortunate to meet with scientists from The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY to learn trapping and processing techniques for small rodents.
Along with the use of forceps, blowing on the rodent to move the hair is important for finding attached ticks.
