"A vasta produção literária de Paulina Chiziane, com destaque para o romance “Niketche”, chega a nós, do lado de cá do Atlântico, como um ótimo exemplo de como podemos alimentar nossas tradições e, ao mesmo tempo, bater de frente com as injustiças que nos impedem de realizar nossos sonhos e verdades. Sua fala será sobre A Identidade Africana e as Religiões Mundiais, quando vai debater o lugar da Africa"

This is me holding a demi-tasse with a pair of forceps on the saucer because I had been hospitalized for some time and my (former) boss came to visit with some things from work to make silly pictures. I look like the biggest dirt ever.

Even though it came out a bit under-exposed, I liked the framing of this Forceps Butterflyfish. Taken at La Perouse Bay, September, 2004.

The dentist reached into my mouth with forceps, intending to grab a piece of cotton. Somehow he grabbed part of my flesh along with it and it felt like he'd ripped something off.
Me: "Ow!!"
Dentist: "Did that hurt?"
Me: "Mmmrrpph!"
Dentist: "Where?"
Me: Realizing I have no idea what that part of my mouth is called - "Under my tongue."
Dentist: "Oops, I must have pinched you when I used the gauze forceps."
How does that happen?! I had to photograph it in case I loose my ability to salivate or my mouth rots off.

Many of the colour lithographs below were created for US surgeon Joseph Pancoast’s (November 23, 1805 – March 6, 1882) 1844 book A Treatise on Operative Surgery. The blurb tells us: “A treatise on operative surgery comprising a description of the various processes of the art, including all the new operations; exhibiting the state of surgical science in is present advanced condition; with eighty plates containing four-hundred and eighty-six separate illustrations.” These images are for the book’s second edition of 1846, for which they were “enlarged”. Other images can be found in the 1848 work Précis iconographique de médecine opératoire et d’anatomie chirurgicale by Claude Bernard (1813-1878). They are captivating and unsettling.

This is a particularly interesting panel. It is situated around the back of the temple, where there was a hospital. Like later Christian monks, the priests of Egyptian temples were also practitioners of medice it would seem, and this panel shows the instruments they used, which include scalpels, curettes, forceps, dilator, scissors and bottled medicines

Just a strange array of old objects. I think the forceps are late 1800's. The key is from 1905, and all of the change is silver and various vintage. I really wanted a lock of hair in place of the twine, but I just didn't have that laying around.

White Ibis, hanging around at Meaher State Park.
Cool Fact:Whilst foraging in shallow, sparsely vegetated water, the white ibis uses the long, sensitive bill to search for its prey by touch rather than by sight. It moves through the water slowly, periodically stopping to probe its bill under vegetation or down a crustacean burrow. It feeds on a variety of crustaceans, insects, amphibians, small snakes and small fish, and picks its prey up in the forceps-like bill, before breaking larger items up or swallowing the smaller items whole.
