A stolen shot from a photographic assignment. A lot of people seem to find surgical instruments a little bit threatening.
After laboring for 33 hours, and pushing for 2 1/2 hours, the doctor gave Katy two options: forceps or emergency c-section. We opted for the latter, thus saving Mom and baby from more stress. Surgery would be within 20 minutes of this picture being taken.

Description(Physical Details): Set of lithotomy (lithotripsy) instruments in a large wooden case, containing a total of 9 instruments. Includes: 4 pairs of lithotomy forceps of varying sizes, all with a serrated surface on the interior of the forcep and all with one ringed handle and one hooked handle; 3 other pairs of forceps, with the largest pair having fenestrated blades and no serration. Smaller pair of fenestrated forceps, and one pair of lithotomy forceps with straight handles and very large teeth on the inside of the blades. One scoop with serrated surface and ebony handle. One wooden handled needle. Set is incomplete.

These photos show further details of the mayfly found by the River Gelt on 11 August 18, which allow the insect to be identified down to species level.
Photo 1 shows dorsal views of the tip of the abdomen including the male forceps. In the upper shot the penis lobes are in focus, and in the lower shot, the forceps-base is in focus. Photo 2 shows the tibia and tarsus of one of the fore legs.
The mayfly was found to belong to the Heptageniidae family (see pervious photos) and a study of the sketches of the relevant male genitalia presented in the Ref 1 key shows conclusively that the genus must be Ecdyonurus.
The four species in this genus are covered in Fig 23, and the only convincing match is Ecdyonurus venosus. The associated text states that the forceps-base in male imagines is dome-shaped with no teeth or projections - as shown in the lower image of Photo 1. It also states that the ratio of the male fore tibia to tarsus is 1:1.5. Although Photo 2 shows this ratio to be 1:1.45, the tarsus is curved and so its length is slightly underestimated.

I constructed my own version of the Cornell University Universal Gripper using parts that I had lying around my lab. This includes the CrustCrawler SG6-UT Robotic Arm, a Yost Engineering ServoCenter controller, a Reynolds Handi-Vac, and a balloon filled with coffee grounds.
Post double lung transplant (3 Months)
3-Month Bronchoscopy

A Bronchoscopy (Bronch) is where they stick a tiny tube down your throat and look around inside the lungs. I was in a twilight state, so I didn't know what was going on.
This procedure is done to make sure there is no infection, rejection, or anything else going on inside the new transplanted lungs.
The images you see above are the Tracheobronchial tree. There were 2 portions, as you see above.
The results were normal, biopsy results will come soon.

RESULTS- (word for word)
The nasopharnx/oropharnynx appears normal. The larynx appears normal. The vocal cords move normally with phonation and breathing. The subglottic space is sharp. The trachea is normal caliber. The carina is sharp. The tracheobronchial tree was examined to at least the first subsegmental level. Bronchial mucosa was hyperemic in the trachea, but normal in the transplanted lungs. Anatomy are normal; there are no endobronchial lesions, and no secretions.
Anastomoses Examination: The surgical anastomosis in the right & left mainstream bronchus is normal.
BAL was performed in the RML lateral segment (B4) and sent for cell count, bacterial culture, viral smears & culture, fungal & AFB analysis and compromised host protocol.
120 ML of fluid were instilled. 50 ML were returned. The return was cellular. There were no mucoid plugs in the return fluid.
Transbronchial biopsies were performed in the right lower lobe using forceps. The procedure was fluoroscopically guided. 6 biopsy passes were performed (took 6 pieces of my lung for biopsy)
No immediate complications. Estimated blood loss: Minimal
The patient tolerated the procedure well.
