Negatives are hung from surgical haemostat forceps. These forceps never let go even if only a tiny corner of the negative is gripped.

This is a color photograph of four surgical or medical bronze instruments displayed at the Archaeological Museum in Patras, Greece; all four bronze instruments date back to the Mycenean Period (15th – 11th century BC):

№ 23 Pair of forceps or pincers (Voudeni, late 15th – early 12th century BC)

№ 24 Needle (Voudeni, 12th – 11th century BC)

№ 25 Needle (Portes, 12th century BC)

№ 26 Needle (Voudeni, late 11th century BC)

(One can read Homer’s Iliad books IV & XI, too.)

After laboring for 33 hours, and pushing for 2 1/2 hours, the doctor gave Katy two options: forceps or emergency c-section. We opted for the latter, thus saving Mom and baby from more stress. Surgery would be within 20 minutes of this picture being taken.

These photos show further details of the mayfly found by the River Gelt on 11 August 18, which allow the insect to be identified down to species level.

Photo 1 shows dorsal views of the tip of the abdomen including the male forceps. In the upper shot the penis lobes are in focus, and in the lower shot, the forceps-base is in focus. Photo 2 shows the tibia and tarsus of one of the fore legs.

The mayfly was found to belong to the Heptageniidae family (see pervious photos) and a study of the sketches of the relevant male genitalia presented in the Ref 1 key shows conclusively that the genus must be Ecdyonurus.

The four species in this genus are covered in Fig 23, and the only convincing match is Ecdyonurus venosus. The associated text states that the forceps-base in male imagines is dome-shaped with no teeth or projections - as shown in the lower image of Photo 1. It also states that the ratio of the male fore tibia to tarsus is 1:1.5. Although Photo 2 shows this ratio to be 1:1.45, the tarsus is curved and so its length is slightly underestimated.

Some images of this species (imagines) can be found here:

"I didn't expect to recover from my second operation but since I did, I consider that I'm living on borrowed time" - Henri Matisse

Many of the colour lithographs below were created for US surgeon Joseph Pancoast’s (November 23, 1805 – March 6, 1882) 1844 book A Treatise on Operative Surgery. The blurb tells us: “A treatise on operative surgery comprising a description of the various processes of the art, including all the new operations; exhibiting the state of surgical science in is present advanced condition; with eighty plates containing four-hundred and eighty-six separate illustrations.” These images are for the book’s second edition of 1846, for which they were “enlarged”. Other images can be found in the 1848 work Précis iconographique de médecine opératoire et d’anatomie chirurgicale by Claude Bernard (1813-1878). They are captivating and unsettling.
