Here's one of my favorite saw sets. Although I think the Somax saw sets are simply the best out there for smaller teeth, I very much like the Morrills patented saw sets for larger teeth. They're comfortable to hold, very easily set and with the broad plunger as well as anvil they are pretty much foolproof to use. This Apex model was introduced around 1910.
Foolproof Pie Dough
Vodka is essential to the texture of the crust and imparts no flavor, do not substitute. This dough will be moister and more supple than most standard pie doughs and will require more flour to roll out (up to ¼ cup).
2 ½ C unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tsp table salt
2 T sugar
12 T (1 ½ sticks) cold unsalted butter cut into ¼ inch slices
½ C cold vegetable shortening, cut into 4 pieces
¼ C cold vodka
¼ C cold water
1. Process 1 ½ cups flour, salt and sugar in food processor until combined, about 2 one-second pulses. Add butter and shortening and process until homogenous dough just starts to collect in uneven clumps, about 15 seconds (dough will resemble cottage cheese curds and there should be no uncoated flour). Scrape bowl with rubber spatula and redistribute dough evenly around processor blade. Add remaining cup of flour and pulse until mixture is evenly distributed around bowl and mass of dough has been broken up, 4 to 6 quick pulses. Empty mixture into medium bowl.
2. Sprinkle vodka and water over mixture. With rubber spatula, use folding motion to mix, pressing down on dough until dough is slightly tacky and sticks together. Divide dough into two even balls and flatten each into 4 inch disk. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 45 minutes or up to 2 days.

The less lethal rounds pack a huge punch and I needed durable pressure pads for no money, so I built them. I used egg crate foam with wire screen on the flat side. Brass split point brads are inserted through each cup of the foam and make contact with the wire mesh which is one conductor. Under the egg crate foam is sheet steel, which is the other conductor. The egg crate foam keeps the contacts apart, until the impact hits. When the cap of the brad hits the steel a connection is made which fires a relay that drains the rams, lights an led so I can verify impact location, and opens the robotic hand so the weapon is dropped. Here you see a shot of the cheap but foolproof pressure pad. (Look at the dents in the chest piece from the impacts...ouch!)

Super Simple Fudge
I followed this recipe. Basically, I melted chocolate (Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips) with condensed milk on a double boiler, then I mixed in vanilla extract and walnuts. I lined an 8”x8” pan with wax paper and poured the mixture into it. After chilling for a few hours, I cut up the fudge into cubes. I think the fudge tasted best a couple days after I made it. Aside from my mom’s fudge (gotta get her recipe), this is the best fudge I’ve ever tasted.
My camera is acting up in more and more weird ways. So today we went to check out a camera I've been considering as a replacement. The folks at the store were nice enough to let me pop my memory card into their demo camera and snap a few pictures to get a feel for it. The store was actually pretty brightly lit. AND I still had to tweak the colors to make Quinn look less washed out. So today's photo is wonky because I was using a completely unfamiliar camera that I didn't know how to adjust.

(I'm still entertaining suggestions on a good digital camera in about the $200 range or so. Something sort of foolproof would be best. Bad photography runs in the genepool LOL).
Despite applying sunscreen 4x we all got burned. This may be the only foolproof way to keep form burning.

My all-important house keys, which I leave in stupid places all the time. The over-abundance of keyrings is intended to make them less forgettable, though it's certainly not foolproof.
This species is a regular visitor. It likely wants to bathe or feed, and is checking out the surroundings before proceeding lower. These birds are usually spotted in large flocks; they swarm over my thistle feeder in a tumbling mass, and usually perch close enough to permit great photo ops. They are plentiful during high summer and typically ignore my presence. Sexes are determinable... but it's not foolproof, especially for first-year birds. I believe this one to be female.
