Experiment in book sculpture, took this old 50's paperback book about cats and had some fun folding.
I held a series of three sessions at KPF NY demonstrating severals ways to transform a flat single sheet of paper into a complex form. I demonstrated folds that used both standard origami techniques (square paper, no cutting) and more modern approaches (laser-cut and -scored curves). The square forms date back to the Bauhaus movement and I was inspired by the work I did for Erik and Marty Demaine when choosing the shapes of the curved forms. Special thanks also to Alex Soijka who helped with the video.
On 24 Sept 2009, a monumental sculpture from 3,615 pounds of second hand clothing will be created by artist Derick Melander and many helping hands. The resulting piece will be a 5 x 7 foot cube, carefully folded, stacked and arranged by color.
Why 3,615 pounds? That's the amount of textile waste created by New Yorkers every 5 minutes.
This event, hosted by the Council on Environment of New York City, will be part of the 5th Annual Green Brooklyn...Green City Fair and Symposium.

The Hultafors founder, Karl Hilmer Johansson Kollén, invented the folding rule in 1883.
The front fold of Sumidity. What you can't see here is that the whole thing is asymetric - fold, hem, neck all done with subtle shaping.
The pile of clothes on the floor magically turned into neatly folded clothes on the bed. Oh and the elves also put up my favourite geranium print.
There's a method of flower arranging I noticed in Cambodia of folding a flower's petals or leaves in a particular way to crate a stylized shape. I guess you could call it floral origami. The leaves and petals of the lotus are robust enough to hold the folds and to resist breaking, tearing or bruising. I thought it was really cool, would love to learn how to do it if only lotus flowers could be procured back here in Toronto.

Don't the folds and indentations in these copper discs resemble a stream with pebbles on either side? The copper discs have be fold formed and dangle from turquoise, wrapped in oxidized sterling wire.

Old time Music hosted the second of our benefits for local musicians with medical needs. This was for singer/songwriter Steve White.
Many local performers donated their time to this worthy cause.
The surprising hit of the show was the relatively unknown group, Folding Mr. Lincoln.

Unit folded four times across the outcrop. The layer under the note book and all the other like layers is actually the same layer folded across the outcrop.
Circle fold on an A4 / 235gram. Actually is same as the big bang however this is with less folds and without cutting the circle out.
Each A3 page folded and then stitched, also then cut to size on the edge. This has been a very long process but I prefer to hand stitch it as it adds to the hand made feel of all my work.
