TWO-OF-A-KIND

This is the billboard that started my collection in 1972. Here's me in front of a few panels tacked up in my off-campus college housing:

Original cost: $3.50. The poster was postmarked 9/1/1972. The artist was Pat Dypold who at one time worked for the J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Company in Chicago. JWT orchestrated the UnCola ad campaign. She did most of this work after forming her own independent studio. Her signature is in the bottom right corner. She also did the well known 7Up Butterfly and Bottle artwork and the bulk of the other outdoor ads. An ad like the one I used to order it can be seen here:

Collage of (12) panels (2 high x 6 wide) totaling 9'-9" x 21'-1". Each 43" wide x 59" tall thick paper sheet was photographed panel-by-panel on a homemade vacuum table (<$30) and photoshopped together into this 3rd color collage of this design to minimize inconsistent lighting and shadows from folds. Only the 6 far right panels have ever been displayed (in my college housing when first issued). This is the very billboard that my collection evolved from. There is some yellowing from early exposure to acids present in the original cardboard box in half of panels E2 & F2 (who knew?), a few thumb tack holes & regretable masking tape reinforcement behind those corners. The other 6 panels are in mint condition. The colors are really this vivid! This was only printed in this giant "30 sheet" billboard size.

The presence of signatures was a perk to help certain artists establish name recognition. Artists, well known or not, were invited to submit designs that were then reviewed anonymously by the client. Interestingly, those submitted by Peter Max were not picked for the campaign per the art director at JWT.

Around this time, 7Up ads often sold the idea of ice cream floats, perfect for boys and girls to share with two straws on a date.

This is the 1st 7Up UnCola billboard image to be processed so far out of about 2 dozen different images in my collection to date. Check back later to see more as they get repaired (if necessary), photographed and photo-collaged together. It takes a while to process thousands of square feet of vintage paper that's almost 5 decades old in my limited spare time. I also have a few duplicates of the more popular billboards.

This is my niece! Audrey Ann Elise. She is only 2 years old. I really wanted to have a shoot with her that didn't necessarily have the look of usual children photography. Its the same outfit I used in a previous shoot with an older girl. Its a skirt we wrapped around her and tied it off in the back. Let me tell you, its hard working with a cute little 2 year old. They get bored easily. I told her if she held the lantern it would attract little birdies. She got so excited and did really well for about 15 minutes. She is such a cutie.

Participants of Rainbow Fest sing Aum, 2007. The photos were made during trips over places when people always felt themselves naturally. They are always between us playing flutes, making dread-locks, walking, smiling, drawing? They meet together in beautiful corners of the Eart: Crimean Tarkhankoot, Lisya bay, Carpathian mountains, Shypit, the Kola peninsula, South Karelia, Altai...

Walter Thompson [advertising] Company in Chicago that orchestrated the 7Up UnCola ad campaign. Most of the UnCola work was performed after she opened her own studio and took commissions from JWT. Collage of (16) various sized panels totaling 9'-9" x 21'-1". Each thick paper sheet was photographed panel-by-panel on a homemade vacuum table (<$30) to minimize inconsistent lighting and shadows from folds and photoshopped together into this color collage . This has never been displayed individually or as a complete unit. There is some yellowing noticable in certain areas due to the vast square footage of monotone white background. No pin holes. The colors are really this vivid! The 2 far left panels were/are missing and have been recreated digitally from a smaller poster of the same image. At some point I will print the 2 panels on matching paper.

The presence of signatures was a perk to help certain artists establish name recognition. Artists, well known or not, were invited to submit designs that were then reviewed anonymously by the client. Interestingly, those submitted by Peter Max were not picked for the campaign per the art director at JWT.

This particular billboard was reportedly never offered to the general public like most of the others in my collection - only as favors to people "in the trade". This is one of at least 4 confirmed initial UnCola billboard images that were displayed in early 1969 so travelers on their way to Woodstock in mid-August 1969 very conceivably saw them. The summer of 2019 will be the joint 50th anniversary of Woodstock and the public unveiling of the UnCola art competition winners. Refer to the 7Up Fallpaper poster offer issued just 7 weeks after Woodstock featuring small reproductions of their popular "un-credible" billboards:

Each 43" wide x 59" tall thick paper sheet was photographed panel-by-panel on a homemade vacuum table (<$30) to minimize inconsistent lighting and shadows from folds and photoshopped together into this color collage. Photo editing was done to make the white body a consistent white. In reality, the colors on the panels match exactly, but the camera light sensors are easily fooled on panels this large.

The colors are really this vivid!

The presence of signatures was a perk to help certain artists establish name recognition. Up and coming artists of the day were invited to submit designs that were then reviewed anonymously by the client. Contrary to popular opinion, Peter Max was not a part of the 7Up UnCola billboard series because 7Up didn't want any artists to overshadow the product itself.

I was absolutely thrilled when my Surreal Make Up Model, Rachel, asked me to do a Hippie creative shoot of her!! This was her first modeling shoot besides head shots and she was a pro! Make up was by Nina Muller. Styling was a joint effort between myself and Rachel!

My 4 year old grandson was curious about my refective sunglasses. He insisted on wearing them and I told him he could only wear them if I could get a picture of him wearing them. Whata bargen for me! I was a trippy hippie for Purim porty!

I am wearing a dress my mother kept from the 60's. If I hadn't been wearing these leggings, I would have been forced to change back into my school clothes, and possibly suspended.

Chavi was my even more trippy hippie boyfriend with a guitar, but that photo will come later.

Peace Love, and Bring our boys and girls home!

Dear Prudence, let me see you smile

Dear Prudence, like a little child

The clouds will be a daisy chain

So let me see you smile again

Dear Prudence, won't you let me see you smile?

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?

Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day

The sun is up, the sky is blue

It's beautiful and so are you

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?

Kathy Adams is the founder & director of Empowerment International, a non-profit organization in Nicaragua & Costa Rica that offers the hope of a better future to the children of the poorest families, by providing an education & all school supplies ( school uniforms, books, etc ) which would not be even remotely affordable for the families, many of whom live on less than $2 a day. Currently there are 267 children enrolled in the programme, which also includes educating the families on the investment-in-the future value of allowing the kids to stay in school, rather than working and / or begging to augment the family's meagre income.. Kathy & her team now also have a photography programme available to the older children, which has proven to both reveal their innate talents & boost their self-esteem. Needless to say, Kathy is a remarkable woman who has chosen to make a difference in this world. Please check out her photostreams & profile..

My last post for a couple of weeks, folks. Wednesday, I'm flying down to Nicaragua to meet Kathy, take photos of the kids & write their stories for EI's portfolio & any other fund-raising purpose they may be deemed useful for. I'm prepaing my heart to fall in love with a lot of children. I'm hugely excited by the challenge of the work. And panic stricken I won't be able to deliver :)) Be well, everyone. Happy posting! And thanks from the heart for your support. Means a lot to me. You give me the courage to say "yes, I can do this" Ciao for now. Ana

Image : this beautiful, bright-eyed, shining-with-health little girl was at a toronto street festival enjoying all the carefree fun activities of a summer day with her family, Here, it was her turn for a balloon animal. She's watching the balloons being twisted into shape., Her mom gave me permission to take the pic but, shame, I forgot to ask the child's name !
