"Flow Country" is the name now commonly applied to the entire area of peatland in Caithness and Sutherland. These peatlands are of great international importance and form one of the most ancient and near-natural landscapes in Britain.

The spillway flows into the downstream continuation of the original Acrewknowe Burn, which after a short distance meets the Slitrig Water.
The reservoir was formed in the eighteen eighties by blocking the course of the Acreknowe Burn.
