Kanoa floats off a wave

I’ve been eyeing these inflatable cup holders for literally a year now but I could never justify paying $10-$20 for *one* but turns out Cotton On (a clothing store) is clearancing out a whole bunch for $3 each so I had to grab one.

I picked the swan cuz, next to the flamingo, it’s one of the most common pool floats I’ve seen on Instagram.

Henry’s enjoying floating around in my bath tub though.

It's all blood and sweat and life is what you manage inbetween

Large colorful glass balls, up to 40 inches in diameter, fill an antique boat in this exhibition by Dale Chihuly at San Francisco's de Young Museum. Chihuly calls these orbs his 'Niijima Floats' . He was inspired to create the Niijima floats after visiting friends in Niijima, an island in Tokyo Bay. They are reminiscent of traditional Japanese fishing floats and are among the largest free-blown forms ever created. Chihuly began the series in 1991, experimenting by using glass made from Niijima's beach sand. The floats were installed along the island's coast, many of which were sent out to sea. To this day, millions of traditional fishing floats still drift in the Pacific trade currents. It's good luck to find one on the beach.

The boat and orbs are reflected against the black glass bottom they are set upon. It's a remarkable display. No flash photography was allowed. The speckles of white light reflected on the glass bottom were from overhead lights that illuminated the display.

There was one film (I think the one that I bought in Thailand) that seems to have variable levels of over-cookedness to it (although a light leak from them rear of the film can't be ruled out) with considerable colour shifts going on, like here. That said, the effect seems to emphasise the sun and the heat, which is nice and relevant.

My Nikon D7200 DSLR carefully floats above my outstretched hand.

I spent today (Saturday) helping to build a parade float for the trans support group I'm a part of. This was my outfit: Denim skirt; male mode belt; fun workout shirt I spotted at Boston Store ("I run because I like dessert"); and a Madison Mallards ball cap to keep the sun out of my eyes.

I hope everyone has a fun Fourth of July. Don't get firecrackered!

This Rabac beach is connected to Labin downtown by a pleasant hiking trail (nr. 804) winding through a natural park. Major part of the trail is shadowed from direct sunlight - a huge benefit in Summer. A video of this trail: youtu.be/eiqQ2yBTk3w

views of a water treatment facility in austin, tx that doubles as a bird sanctuary. take heed and do not attempt a trip on a windy day. you will stink afterwards...

Don't be afraid to add a little bit of magic into your life.

Tofino, British Columbia, Canada

Tofino is a small district on Vancouver Island, off Canada's west coast. It sprawls on a peninsula within Clayoquot Sound, characterized by wild natural scenery including lakes, inlets and ancient rainforest.

Sandy beaches with year-round surfing facilities include Cox Bay, Chesterman Beach and popular Long Beach, part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The relaxed town of Tofino sits on the peninsula's tip.

Tofino is a district of about 1,876 residents on the west coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada, located at the western terminus of Highway 4, on the tip of the Esowista Peninsula, at the southern edge of Clayoquot Sound.

A popular tourist destination in the summer, Tofino's population swells to many times its winter size. It attracts surfers, nature lovers, bird watchers, campers, whale watchers, fishermen, or anyone just looking to be close to nature. In the winter it is not as bustling, although many people visit Tofino and the west coast to watch storms on the water.

Close to Tofino is Long Beach, a scenic and popular year-round destination, at the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Maquinna Marine Provincial Park, with its natural hot springs, is located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) north of Tofino, a popular day-trip destination for tourists only reachable by boat or float plane.

Floats, Zodiacs and a Fountain of Youth: Kushida Shrine

By

Jade Miles -

April 27, 2021

A gentle breeze flaps the tall flags at the entrance to Kushida Shrine as I wait for a chance to cross the street. At first glance it appears like any other jinja but, in fact, it’s one of the oldest and most revered Shinto shrines in Fukuoka. Established in 757, Kushida Shrine, affectionately known as ‘okushida-san’ is thought of as a guardian shrine of the city. People come as early as 4 am to pray to the enshrined deities Ohata Nushina-Mikoto, Amaterasu and her younger brother Susanoo, for good health and good fortune. Not known for being an early bird, it was a little later that I first stepped through the stone torii.

Entrance to the shrine

Inside the main gate, I crane my neck to see the eto ehou ban overhead. This circular disc features the twelve Chinese zodiac signs as well as the kanji characters for North, South, East and West. Each year on New Year’s Eve, the central spinner is pointed to the new lucky direction. For me, it points west-south-west.

The zodiac wheel

Stepping into the gravel clearing, I’m momentarily transfixed by the beautiful, chunky shimenawa straw rope hanging from the main hall. I move closer, passing between two omikuji paper fortune vending machines and stare up at the fine craftsmanship.

Kushida Shrine, with an impressive parade float, fountain of youth and many more surprises, is one of our favourite Shinto shrines in Fukuoka!
