1284-2024 Flint Castle is also famous as the location of a fateful meeting in 1399 between Richard II and his rival to the crown Henry Bolingbroke (later Henry IV), an event immortalised in Shakespeare’s Richard II.

The very first of Edward I's series of castles built to subdue the Welsh. The design of Flint Castle is unique being based on medieval French designs which saw one of the corner towers isolated and enlarged.

 

Act 3 Scene 3 of Shakespeare's Richard II is set "before Flint Castle" and Richard was held here by Henry Bolingbroke, the future Henry IV, before being taken back to London and abdicating in 1399.

Act 3 Scene 3 of Shakespeare's Richard II is set at Flint Castle. At one point Richard appears on the castle walls with Bolingbroke, Northumberland and the Duke of York below:

 

"See, see, King Richard doth himself appear.

As doth the blushing discontented sun

From out the fiery portal of the east,

When he perceives the envious clouds are bent

To dim his glory and to stain the tract

Of his bright passage to the occident."
