An innocent question about starting fires without matches inspired Russ's "Weekend Adventurer" persona. He immediately set to work demonstrating to us firestarting techniques with a firebow and with flint-and-steel.

Any river in Michigan is going to be relatively tiny, as there's not much room in the peninsula for a big watershed. The Flint River flows a mere 78 miles, draining a small portion of central Michigan into the larger Shiawassee River, which flows into Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron. I have a big interest in watersheds and hydrologic geography, so the Flint River is interesting to me, at least in its associations. I was born into the Shiawassee basin, though not in the portion that flows to the Flint.

Flint Castle (Welsh: Castell y Fflint) located in Flint, Flintshire, was the first of a series of castles built during King Edward I's campaign to conquer Wales.
The site was chosen for its strategic position in North East Wales. The castle was only one day's march from Chester, supplies could be brought along the River Dee and there was by a ford across to England that could be used at low tide.
