Protected desert plant and floral emblem of South Australia

A lone tree in the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens with the Southern Flinders Ranges as a backdrop

South Australian desert - aboriginal dreaming says this was caused by two giant serpents fighting - when you view it from the air it looks exactly like that.

The Cazneaux tree (right) is an old river red gum that was made famous by the photographer Harold Cazneaux back in 1937. The photo was titled "The spirit of endurance" and was described at the time as being his most "Australian" picture. The background is the western edge of Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges, mid-north of South Australia.

The sky in the North Flinders was unbelievably clear. I have never seen the Milky Way visible all the way down to the horizon before. To be fair, the horizon was probably 5 degrees above horizontal, but that is still very low.

I believe that the section of sky shown corresponds to the "Dark Emu" of aboriginal lore....

Another frosty start to the day, Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

This early morning view is in the Flinders Ranges National Park in South Australia and looks towards a section of the mist shrouded Heysen Range which dominates the background.

This photo was taken from the Bunyeroo Valley Lookout which has a commanding view of the Razorback Lookout which is at the spot where the road appears to end but which does in fact veer to the right, immediately before the lookout and continues on down through the Bunyeroo Valley.

The foreground slopes on the right are covered in white wildflowers and there is a car parked at the Razorback Lookout.

Always on the lookout for the classic outback windmill bore shot - this was a wonderful misty sunrise in South Australia's mid north somewhere near Hawker. The sun looked amazingly huge through the mist and the sepia colour was exactly as I saw it.

A little redo of an old favourite.

Photographers try very hard to not have an intrusive stick or thorn looking like it is part of the subject! I'm afraid that this vicious collection of prickly vegetation was more than I could handle.

I blame her, actually.

Soft pastel pinks, purples, oranges and yellows blanketing the sky just before sunrise.

A bright flickering star in the tree was actually the International Space Station, making a very bright trail! The Zodiacal Light behind a big gum tree near Moralana Scenic Drive north of Hawker. At any distance from the observer, it is impossible to miss the male Red-capped Robin, so long as he is facing you! The red chest and forehead really are as vivid as they appear here.

It was late afternoon and I was on my way to Port Broughton between Burra and Spalding when I spotted this abandoned farmhouse. Here I was attacked by the marauding magpies :-) The Australian magpies can get quite vicious when they are nesting... in early spring usually.

On the way to the Flinder's Ranges - Carrieton Post Office - My other grandfather - on my fathers side and my grandmother were married in this village - almost deserted now. Not so far from Burra where my Grandfather on my mothers side came from small world.

With 128 wagons of iron ore and 11200 hauled tonnes it could be though to be too much for one loco, but two more are bringing up the rear as distributed power.

Perfect late afternoon sun highlights Aurizon Bulk Central's train 9612 from Wirrida to Whyalla as it passes the locale of Lincoln Gap, less than an hour from its destination. South Australia's Flinders Ranges dominate the background.

The Arkaba Hills with part of the Elder Range behind them in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.

I was driving from Wilpena Pound to Port Augusta to meet my daughter who was flying in from Adelaide. The forecast was for a severe dust storm and I stopped to take this photo because of the unusual clouds which were swirling as they constantly rose and fell. By the time I arrived at Port Augusta visibility was down to about four kilometres with very strong gusting wind.

There were concerns her plane might have to return to Adelaide but fortunately it landed but within 30 minutes visibility was down to two kilometres. What a terrible hot dusty day.

I have only now realised that artist Hans Heysen drew this same scene in 1930 and his drawing is held in the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

Cazneaux's Tree is a large river red gum that was made famous by Australian pictorialist photographer Harold Cazneau (1878 -1953) who photographed this tree in 1937 and his photo titled "The Spirit of Endurance", bought international recognition.

It is early morning and the sun behind me has just started to rise above a saddle between two hills and it is these hills that are casting long shadows across the plain.

The near full moon is frozen between jaws comprised of the tree's foliage.

This tree is listed by the National Trust of South Australia and is located a few kilometres north of Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

The mountains in the background are part of the Heysen Range between Wilpena Pound and the Bunyeroo Valley.
