this once-widespread species in inland range country in SA and NSW went in to a dramatic decline after colonisation due to hunting for the fur trade, the introduction of feral predators (mainly foxes), the introduction of feral competitors (goats and rabbits), and habitat destruction

fortunately in south australia their numbers are on the increase again due to decades of active conservation management, but the species is still listed as ‘vulnerable’

their situation remains more precarious in western NSW, where goat management in particular is virtually non-existent

"It's dry, all right," said young O'Neil,

With which astute remark

He squatted down upon his heel

And chewed a piece of bark.

And so around the chorus ran

"It's keepin' dry, no doubt."

"We'll all be rooned," said Hanrahan,

"Before the year is out."

I don't know if these ruins were a farm, but if that were so, drought could certainly have brought them undone. If it was connected to the railway, nearby, financial reasons might have come into play.

The stone ruins which were once the impressive buildings of Kanyaka Station. Settled and owned by a young Englishman, Hugh Proby, the enterprise supported 70 families, required to manage the immense sheep and cattle run.

The property is NNE of Quorn in South Australia's Flinders Ranges. The harsh, arid land's traditional owners were the Barnggaria people.

The Cazneaux Tree, also known as Cazneaux's Tree, is a Eucalyptus camaldulensis or river red gum that was made famous by the photographer Harold Cazneaux. It is located in the Australian state of South Australia in the locality of Flinders Ranges near Wilpena Pound.

Cazneaux's 1937 sepia homage to the hardy Red Gum was entitled "Spirit of Endurance" and it still stands today as a testament to the resilience of the the Australian landscape.

The Railway siding town of Wilson was established in 1881 as a service point on the rail line between Quorn to the south and Hawker 14km to the north. A general store and a hotel were set up and a well was sunk to provide water for bullock teams and a small number of residents. By 1884 Wilson boasted three stores, a school, a saddler, a butcher, a blacksmith, a carpenter and a branch of the Commercial Bank.

By 1898 the population was around 70 with 18 houses but lack of water continued to plague the town and drought eventually sounded the death knell. The Post and Telegraph facilities closed in 1933. The school and hotel both closed in 1942. The rail line is long gone and the only things remaining are a few gravestones at the old cemetery and this ruin of the Stationmaster’s house.

I was taken up to the summit of Mount Arden for sunset by the owners of the property.

Flinders Ranges South Australia

Classic view of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia taken along the Moralana Scenic Drive.

An early morning shot taken on the eastern side of Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges after a particularly wet winter which left the landscape looking wonderfully lush in what is normally a hot and dry part of the country.

Original colour slide was taken around 2010 with a 3D World medium format stereo film camera using Fuji Provia 100F colour slide film. Scanned with a Canon R10 with RF24-240mm lens and Nisi close up attachment.

*** Apologies for the slight lack of sharpness. I accidentally uploaded this at a slightly lower resolution from the original scan, and once I had uploaded it, did not want to go through the whole process again ***

17% moonrise, just risen! 4 shot vertical panorama with a 60 second blend for the ground. I hadn't scouted any sites, so this is very close to Hawker, while the RASA telescope was running.

Semaphore, located on the Lefevre Peninsula northwest of Adelaide, Australia, is a charming coastal town. Established in 1849, its name originates from a signaling station used to communicate the arrival of ships. The area is renowned for its white sandy beach, historic jetty, and vibrant foreshore lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops. Attractions include the Time Ball Tower, built in 1875, and Art Deco-style buildings. Semaphore also offers recreational activities such as mini golf and carousel rides. It is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, seeking to enjoy the sun and history in a picturesque setting.

Except for immediately following rainfall, which is generally infrequent, creek beds in the Flinders Ranges do not, for the most part, have visible running water. Nevertheless there is oftentimes water filtering through the sand beneath the ground which can be forced to the surface in places by local bedrock, as seen here. Upstream and downstream of this section of flowing water the creek bed is seemingly dry.

Chases Range, Central Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

Driving along the absolutely abandoned highways I felt as though I had to re-adjust my eye-sight to focus further into the distance - everything just spans to the horizon.

For this photo I wanted to take a different approach. What I was looking at was a 'landscape arena' and I wanted to take a photo that would somehow, someway come close to capturing the essence of this arena.

Press "L" to view this large on black and, as always, thanks for looking!

(This is one photo I think really needs to be seen large..)

I went for a drive up the road for a few days into the outback of South Australia.

As we head into our final weeks of winter here this land is still very dry & could use a few showers of rain. HFF

Reluctant to allow us to get too close, these little Neophemas made up in numbers what they lacked in proximity.

Warren Gorge is an absolutely glorious spot in the Southern Flinders Ranges just outside Quorn.

It's a wonder any type of grazing was possible in this arid environment.
