Her "Sex & Candy" audio cut out halfway through, so we all sang a capella. It was great!

Today, protesters once again returned to downtown Raleigh, NC demanding Governor Roy Cooper reopen the state of NC sooner amid the "Covid 19 pandemic" executive orders that has essentially shut down the state. First the goal was "flattening the curve" so that hospitals would not be overwhelmed and our healthcare system would not collapse base on flawed death predictions of 2 million people dying in the USA. When that false narrative was debunked, they moved the goal posts to "were buying time til we can develop a therapeutic or vaccine". But here in lies the problem, if we are waiting for a "deus ex machina" while tens of thousands of people lose their jobs, and fall into poverty and despair, and we have no timeline at all! Millions have filed for unemployment after trying to contact NC Unemployment for weeks, That is millions out of work. No wonder there are so many angry Americans protesting on our streets.

Really, REALLLY hopin' it spared me the worst.

First and Finest - Heroes Work Here. COVID-19 Response. Johnny Rodgers, a Nurse Consultant and Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s (NMCP) High Level Disinfection Program Manager, is at the forefront of NMCP’s COVID-19 response.

When Rodgers heard of the shortages of masks and personal protective equipment (PPE), he began to plan a process for the sterilization and reuse of masks. After much research, he was able to gather information and adapt a plan that would work for NMCP. Within 15 days of beginning this process, NMCP had processed more than 500 masks.

“This process has reduced the amount of N-95 waste,” Rodgers said. “It helps to reduce the amount of stock that’s used on a daily basis so we can maintain our supply levels for as long as this pandemic exists.”

To-date, NMCP has reprocessed more than 880 masks and eye protection equipment.

Rodgers says that NMCP is now able to reprocess every mask two times, given that there is no damage, deterioration or contamination. Once the new UV light system is set in place, the same mask will be able to be reprocessed an additional 10 times, allowing one mask to now become 10-13 masks.

While he has been the spearhead of this innovation, Rodgers says that he could not have done this alone. HM3 Colton Jones was appointed the team lead and he selected three strong corpsmen for the team. They have spent extra hours and weekends training to make sure that they properly collect, sort, package, sterilize and then deliver the masks.

“They are the ones making it work,” Rodgers said. “They are the true heroes.”

Rodgers would like the command and the community to know that this has truly been a team effort.

“We’re here to support our staff, support our patients, and support the mission,” Rodgers said.

The great efforts put forth by Johnny Rodgers and the many others proves that #HeroesWorkHere at #NMCPFirstandFinest.

On the eve of the Republican National Convention, August 21, 2020 a coalition of Americans reeling from the COVID-related deaths of loved ones, unemployment, and all this crisis has wrought gathered at Barclays Center to turn their sadness and frustration into protest by organizing the March for the Dead, Fight for the Living, a candlelit procession across the Brooklyn Bridge to the Trump Building at 40 Wall Street in Manhattan demanding the Trump administration and beyond to take responsible action to save lives and end suffering. In honor of Earth Day, I decided to finish my #hike100nct challenge today, 4/22/20, with 92.4 miles on the NCT, and the remainder on 4 other local trails for 32 miles, as part of April’s #hikefromhome. Each year, I xc ski in winter, unless the snow isn’t sufficient, when I hike instead, then continue through Spring wildflower season, spend summers hiking & backpacking in the mountains Out West or internationally, then returning home for Fall colors. I enjoy sharing the trails with friends, many times introducing them to a new destination. I especially love hiking along creeks, ponds, lakes & rivers. This year, my NCT miles were from snowshoeing with the Jordan Valley 45 chapter from Starvation Lake to Pickerel Lake State Forest Campground, xc skiing at Valley Spur in Munising, xc skiing & hiking at Muncie Lakes State Forest Pathway, hiking 6 of my favorite Grand Traverse Hiking Club sections, from Baxter Bridge to High Banks Rollway & back, Valley of the Giants, Hodenpyl Dam Rd to Fletcher Creek Campground, Spring Lake SF Campground to US131 MDOT Roadside Park, Dell Rd to Old US 131 SF Campground, and Guernsey Lake SF Campground to Kalkaska, in addition to the Bear River Valley in downtown Petoskey & Deadman’s Hill loop in the Jordan River Valley. Due to the coronavirus social distancing orders, I decided to hike the NCT solo in April, which required 5 mtn bike shuttles for my point-to-point hikes, which I prefer over out & back hikes. But, I have done many all-day hike & paddles on the Manistee River Trail over the past 20 years, thanks to Mike Schaeffer’s introduction, including for my October birthday each Fall. I really got excited about these hiking challenges after reading about the Allegheny 100 in the North Star magazine ten years ago, after which I led a Fall 2010 NCT Challenge, 43.6 miles on 9 hikes on my favorite sections of the Grand Traverse Hiking Club’s NCT with 18 participants. When the GTHC introduced their 100-Mile Challenge in 2011, I completed that & the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s Trail Trekker Challenge. Although the GTHC’s 100 is only awarded once, I decided to share the challenge in 2012 with 11 hikes in the Spring, attended by 73 participants, and 7 completed it by the end of the year. As a reward, the next fall, in September 2013, I organized a thru-hike at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore for 11 members, with a mtn biking & camping shakedown on Grand Island the weekend before. Since the start of the NCTA’s #hike100nct in 2016, I have completed all, and enjoy helping friends finish their final miles in the Fall & sometimes in the snow, too. Thanks for this incentive to get newcomers out to discover the NCT. This is what I always envisioned happening when I was on the GTHC Board, and now with the coronavirus, I see many young families & youth out on the local trails, discovering the magic of #hikefromhome together. Although I had planned to backpack the John Muir Trail (JMT) in Aug/Sept with a GTHC girlfriend for my last time (3x previously in 2008, 2009 & 2010, but only North or South half), I now look forward to sharing the NCT this summer with my friends, once we #flattenthecurve. Since my early retirement in fall of 2005, this will be the only summer spent at home besides during my cancer recovery in 2014, so count my blessings each day, to live in such a great community, surrounded by such gorgeous natural beauty! Stay safe & well, NCTA community!

Faculty and staff represented by the Professional Staff Congress (PSC) union held a rally on the first day of classes, January 28, 2022 at Medgar Evers College to demand that university management act to protect the health of students and workers, the jobs of adjunct faculty and the academic progress of students at The City University of New York, calling for no class cancellations or layoffs and improved health and safety protocols. Sorry I don't have more of this act, but I was hungry as hell and had to run to DNA Pizza for food.

In the face of worsening pandemic conditions in the country, a coalition of Activists gathered outside the New York Stock Exchange at Wall Street on January 28, 2021 to call for the Equitable Taxation of Corporations, demanding legislators to pass the Financial Transaction Tax to generate around 9 billion dollars needed for COVID Recovery, and Essential Services. State elected officials joined a group of excluded essential workers who have been on hunger strike for the past two weeks for a press conference at Washington Square Park in Manhattan on March 29, 2021 to call on state lawmakers not to leave excluded workers behind in their negotiated budget, which is expected to be released over the coming days.
