Corona times Hamburg - #flattenthecurve

The news continue to be very grim… The death toll reported yesterday surged to 496 as 171 deaths that took place “in the preceding weeks” were only now being added to the total death count that now stands at 3,019. Nursing home residents account for nearly half of Belgium’s total coronavirus deaths. Also, the government reported yesterday that 462 new patients were admitted to the hospital in the last 24 hours, and that 404 new people have been discharged. This brings the total number of people in hospital to 5,610. The coming days promise to continue to be sunny, and even summery and whilst many people continue to practice physical activities outdoors researchers at KU Leuven and at the Eindhoven University of Technology created simulations showing how those working out outdoors could be exposing themselves to the virus even when staying 1.5 metres apart. The simulations showed that the slipstreams between two people jogging behind one another were likely to see the second person come into contact with the first’s droplets as they travelled through the slipstream that can sometimes be as long as 10 to 15 metres. I nevertheless will continue walking and exploring Ghent’s street art hotspots but now at a slower pace…:-) Bastionstraat, Ghent, Belgium

When I told Grady we have to stay home for a while to #flattenthecurve, he wasn’t too happy. Just wait until I try to explain to him about social distancing! 😳 Hope you are all well!

Experts are telling that the measures that have been implemented are starting to pay off and that the force of the epidemic is decreasing. Nevertheless, yesterday the government reported that 1,063 new people have tested positive for Covid-19. The total number of cases in Belgium is now 11,899. The total number of people admitted to hospital is 4,524, an increase of 536 patients in one day. Of those patients, 927 are in the intensive care unit. Also, 82 new deaths have been reported, bringing the total number of deaths in Belgium to 513. Let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worst. To keep my sanity, I carry on with my daily corona walks. Yesterday I continued to explore Ghent’s Street Art Hotspots. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy – Colruyt Ledeberg, Ghent, Belgium

6:30 pm and normally the main street is bustling, the restaurants are noisy, and no parking is to be had.

The photographs in this album were not taken by myself. They were taken in and around London in late March 2020 and show the extent the people in this lovely city are taking the current pandemic very seriously indeed.

Like millions of others in the UK I’m adhering to the advice of the government to remain in my home so that my own chances of catching the Covid-19 virus are minimised.

The pictures show how quiet some major London landmarks are at this worrying time.

I’d love to go out and take some pictures of my own but know that to do so would be irresponsible.

I hope that the pictures give my friends and contacts on flickr some idea of how serious the people of the UK are taking this potential health crisis.

A further 190 deaths have been reported. The total death toll currently stands at 6,679. 210 patients were admitted to hospital yesterday while 322 patients were discharged. There are current 4,355 people receiving treatment for COVID-19 in Belgian hospitals. This is 172 fewer than the day before. Our efforts are paying off! More good news was coming from Prime Minister Sophie Wimès. Wilmès announced the next stages in the lockdown measures. As of 4 May, there will be a gradual return to work whilst telework will remain the norm. Also, cycling or going for a walk as a group of three will be allowed. Public transport will resume its usual activities, but the use of face masks will become mandatory. Gatherings and meeting friends at home will remain prohibited. On 11 May all stores will reopen but jobs involving close contact, such as hairdressers, will not be able to start yet. The new “corona-look” is there to stay! On 18 May primary and secondary school will gradually re-open and on 8 June restaurants and cafes will gradually reopen. The transition between phases will be monitored and potentially adjusted/finetuned based on a number of criteria, including the spread of the virus, the number of hospital admissions and the saturation of intensive care beds. Also contact tracing has been put in place. Meaning, when people show symptoms of being infected, they should go to the doctor and be tested. When it turns out that they have the coronavirus, the data of who they have been in contact with for the past two weeks, will be passed on to a contact tracing center. Those people will then be contacted and if tested positive put in quarantine. We’re moving in the right direction, but we have a long period of transition ahead of us, before we will regain our freedoms and go back to "normal" life. first in line, 17 people behind me, shop open till midnight

So good you just had to keep shovelling it in. Absolutely delicious even though I say so myself.

All over the world this nasty disease is being spread by irresponsible people who don't either understand the danger or are ignorant of its power to keep in infecting millions of people.

We have to stop it. And the easiest way to do that is to isolate yourself from coming into contact with other people.

So please, if you read this, heed the message and help the world to stop this disease in its tracks.

The security council’s ban on mass events till 31 August means that all the big summer events will be cancelled. In Ghent too many are heartbroken, It is the first time since World War I that the Ghent Festivities will not take place. The Festival of Ghent is without doubt the biggest and best-known street festival in Europe, attracting around 2 million visitors each year. “The Ghent Festivities are part of the city’s DNA. The cancellation of course hurts, but we are resilient. In 2021 we plan to party twice as hard” said Mathias De Clercq, the city’s mayor. Here are some memories of the sparkling “Gentse Feesten” from 2014. On display are people enjoying a performance of late Walter De Buck. It was one of his last public appearances before he passed away later that year. Walter De Buck was a singer, sculptor and founder of the modern “Gentse Feesten” – Sint-Jacobsplein, Ghent, Belgium.

Telko is my new favorite word these days. It's a German short form for Telefonkonferenz (telephone conference). But maybe I will hate this word soon :D

Second Best "52 Weeks Project"

Since I have been joining the 52 Weeks Project on Flickr it has happened several times that I had to chose between two or more self portraits that week. A difficult choice. The solution is to create a set of all good alternatives. Life is full of choices and sometimes a week has too much opportunities. This is one of those alternatives, the second best. And sometimes just as good.

Although I had already posted two "52 Weeks" selfies in week 13, there was still an opportunity that I wanted to make public. In good company, focused on current world situation and with beautiful soft light...

Location: Overloopplantoen, Plantage Muidergracht corner Plantage Kerklaan.

Coordinates: 52°36'60" N 4°90'89" E

Reason: Due to the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) one of the measures to fight the virus is social distancing in between people. Since 20/03/2020 my collegues and me have no work on Thalys as Train Managers for the moment and we came up with the idea of meeting in a public area and drink our own cpffee to be at least together for an hour or so. And so happened. We call it Drinking coffee remotely respecting the minimum of 1.5 meters in between us. The first time was on Sunday 22/03/2020 on the jetty on the Amstel in front of the Hermitage Museum. This week this beautiful spot near the Hortus Botanicus.

Guest Stars: Jan, Ingrid, Jan-Pieter and Pieter-Paul.

Tradition: As long as the crisis lasts we might make this a tradition on Sunday at 11h59 sharp!

Covid-19: Photo taken the same week of the the "intelligent lock down" in the Netherlands started to fight the corona virus. No more gathering, social distancing of 1m50 and washing your hands regulary. #stayhome #flattenthecurve

Weather: Partly cloudy, windy and 7° C

Self-portrait technics: Joby portable gorillapod placed on a concrete round piece of concrete in the middle of this little park.

Window drawing pup up as mushrooms downtown Ghent. There is a need for more positive vibes a score of art-loving people in Ghent must have been thinking when they initiated a project to draw beautiful artwork on their windows or on that of shops or crèches. Ever since drawings have appeared on windows across the city in recent days and special walking routes have been drawn up to ensure you don’t miss anything. The idea is to cheer cyclist and walkers up in these challenging times. I came across some of the window drawings during yesterday’s corona walk. I hope you enjoy these works of art as much as I did. Stay safe, stay healthy – Ghent, Belgium.

A springtime snow and a beautiful morning to get out in the woods. Hope everyone is doing well. We're pretty hunkered down here in New York, hoping for the best!
