This is a scene of the Flathead taken outside of Kalispell, Montana. The Flathead River, in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Montana, originates in the Canadian Rockies to the north of Glacier National Park and flows southwest into Flathead Lake, then after a journey of 158 miles, empties into the Clark Fork. The river is part of the Columbia River drainage basin, as the Clark Fork is a tributary of the Pend Oreille River, a Columbia River tributary. With a drainage basin extending over 8,795 square miles (22,780 km2) and an average discharge of 11,380 cubic feet per second (322 m3/s), the Flathead is the largest tributary of the Clark Fork and constitutes over half of its flow.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi in the lower 48 states, with over 200 square miles of water and 185 miles of shoreline.

A little change of pace from Montanta few weeks ago.

If I set my mind to it I could be editing photos from that trip for another 8 months.

Driving south from a Job in Canada I drove into Glacier as far as I could. Driving south I passed a frozen Flathead Lake.

Here's a pretty calm image of the Flathead River...it is quite a treacherous river where alot of white water rafting goes on...I give this river my utmost respect...many drownings have occurred in it...nicest in light box..

Have a great day! We're getting terribly high winds and it looks like weather is moving in...oh boy! :)

We went around Flathead Lake to take Sam's sister and husband over to his other sisters outside of Glacier Park. This specific area is called Deep Bay, on the north end of the lake. I was most impressed with the beauty....and then the wake of that boat out there!!! LOLOL!!! Wow...:) Have a nice evening everyone!!! :) Here's a little clip off the internet on Flathead Lake.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake by surface area that is west of the Mississippi River in the contiguous United States, if one takes Red Lake and Lake of the Woods to be north of the Mississippi River, rather than west of the river.

With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi and 197 sq mi, Flathead Lake is slightly larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe, but it is much smaller in volume.

The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial. Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide. Flathead Lake has a maximum depth of 370.7 ft (113.0 m), and an average of 164.7 ft (50.2 m). This makes Flathead Lake deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf. Polson Bay, at the lake's outlet, was raised 10 ft (3.0 m) by Kerr Dam. It is one of the cleanest lakes in the populated world for its size and type.

During our trip to Flathead Lake we had all manner of weather including this distinctive and low level rainbow. This view is taken looking east from close to Kings Point and looks across at the northern end of the Mission mountains. The weather was such that ten minutes later I was in having a swim.

for two days, i got to wake up with this about ten feet away from my tent.

Well we're going over where the Clark Fork meets the Flathead River today!! Have a wonderful Sunday everyone! :)

The Flathead River originates in the Canadian Rockies to the north of Glacier National Park and flows southwest into Flathead Lake, and then after a journey of 158 miles, empties into the Clark Fork River over my way somewhere pretty close Missoula.

My wife and daughters went searching for dragonflies near Hilllsdale Wildlife Area in northeast Kansas. We weren't very successful at Antioch marsh, but stopped at a couple of creek crossings along 215th west of Spring Hill. A Dragonhunter and this 3 foot long cat were under one bridge.

Farm to Market scenes... I saw dust in the distance, turned out they were moving the cattle w/their atvs.

Flathead Lake, Montana

Marks in the sand at low tide where Dusky Flathead have been laying in ambush for small fish like Mullet. Also a couple of round ones maybe from Bream

Model Chelsey on a 1940's era flathead Harley. Is nice to be able to do photo sessions indoors when it is cold!

Model Mayhem model.

Just west of Perma the 10th Sub, crosses from the north side of the Flathead River to the south side. The river is a amazing clear, teal color until it meats up with the Clark Fork river in Paradise and becomes more blue and muddy.

Flathead River

This is a scene taken at Polson, Montana's Boetcher Park. The body of water is Flathead Lake...largest fresh water lake this side of the Mississippi...if you ever want to see some beauty in Montana...from this area on to Glacier Park will not be a letdown! And if you've never tasted Flathead Cherries...that is something you'll want to put on your Bucket List! LOL :) This was my home for around 25 yrs and where I learned to swim! :)

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River in the contiguous United States, taking Red Lake (Minnesota) and Lake of the Woods to be north of the Mississippi River, rather than west of the river. With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi and 197 sq mi, Flathead Lake is slightly larger than Lake Tahoe. The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial. Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi long and up to 15.5 mi wide. Polson Bay, at the lake's outlet was raised 10 ft by Kerr Dam. It is one of the cleanest in the populated world for its size and type.

Located in the northwest corner of the State of Montana, 7 miles south of Kalispell, it is approximately 30 miles long and 16 miles wide, covering 191.5 square miles, making it approximate in size to Minnesota's Mille Lacs Lake and half the area of San Francisco Bay (main bay). Flathead Lake is 30 miles southwest of Glacier National Park and is flanked by two scenic highways, which wind along its curving shoreline. On the west side is U.S. Route 93, and on the east is Route 35.
