Empty grain rolls up the Hi-line just east of West Glacier, Montana, late in the day. The train is running on approaches, and will slide in the next siding. He will roll around two westbounds, and sneak in behind the second for Amtrak 7 who is running behind today. The grain would make it in, and Amtrak wouldn't have to stop at all while he continued to gain time westbound towards Belton and Whitefish. This was a random pull-off and short people wouldn't be able to shoot this. I was standing as tall as I could on the edge of the drop off.
Headed out to Turimetta Beach with the Focus Flickr Group www.flickr.com/groups/northernbeachesnsw/ this morning about 15 of us and first light brought out some nice colours. Followed by an amazing breakfast at Driftwood at Narrabeen - Great to catch with some new faces this morning.

Built as Norfolk Southern SD60 6605 in 1986, SD60E rebuild 6972 curves east onto the New York Central alignment at CP 506, leaving the Pennsylvania Railroad behind.
The flat-fronted EMD rebuilds are something to look out for in a sea of General Electric motors as variety is a commodity not found in abundance nowadays.
This is a scene taken along Hwy 200 going towards Thompson Falls. Lots of fishing goes on along this river....some very beautiful spots! There are some rapids somewhere along here close where a lot of folks raft....fun in the sun!! :) Now I'm not a sissy by any means, but when I walked over to the river bank...I was greeted by a somewhat large snake!!! Yikes!
Large view is very nice....
Would love to go back here today but can't fit this trip in this weekend! back! I'll be back! :)
L is very nice! Be safe eveyone...have a great weekend!
I found this waste high plant when I was walking through the brush to the lake...at first it was closed.....but when I was heading back up to the car it had opened...anyone know what it is? lol :)
I grew up in Polson, Montana which sits along Flathead Lake...so this is kinda like home!!! :)
Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake by surface area that is west of the Mississippi River in the contiguous United States, if one takes Red Lake and Lake of the Woods to be north of the Mississippi River, rather than west of the river.
With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi and 197 sq mi, Flathead Lake is slightly larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe, but it is much smaller in volume.
The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial. Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide. Flathead Lake has a maximum depth of 370.7 ft (113.0 m), and an average of 164.7 ft (50.2 m). This makes Flathead Lake deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf. Polson Bay, at the lake's outlet, was raised 10 ft (3.0 m) by Kerr Dam. It is one of the cleanest lakes in the populated world for its size and type.
Can't tell ya how many times me and girls laid out sunning on this this dock! A very nice swimming spot also!! I actually am just amazed that this dock is still here...the same original one! LOL I love this area and town...it's really bittersweet as I come here...miss it terribly but glad I'm not here! lol...but as I view this..I miss it so much!!! lol :) Have a nice week ahead everyone! :) Large view makes me feel like I'm there! ♥
Montana's Flathead Lake is one big pond of beautiful teal waters from Glacier Park's glacial silt. The Mission Mountains provide the backdrop. I need to spend more time here.....!

This view of the Flathead River and valley was taken from along Red Sleep Mountain Drive through the Bison Range. I should note that many waterways in Montana are unusually full following an unusually wet spring and rapid snow melt from the mountains. In this photo it's evident that there is standing water in the area adjacent to the river, perhaps as a result of overflow, and/or the inability of low-lying soil to absorb excess water, likely a short-term issue as precipitation levels in the region have returned to seasonal norms.
The Bison Range, nee the National Bison Range. In 1908, the federal government carved 18,766 acres out of the Flathead Indian reservation for a very small bison conservation herd. Following the ensuing decades of negotiation, contracts signed and broken, purchases and sales, agreements and betrayals, and numerous legal and legislative actions, in late 2020, management of the range became a fruitful partnership between the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Confederated Kootenai and Salish Tribes (CKST) on whose land the range resides.
The range is meticulously managed to assure quality habitat for the 300-500 head of bison, plus elk, deer, pronghorns, bighorns, bears, many other small mammals, and birds, wildflowers and other native vegetation, and to maintain healthy waterways, including Mission Creek. Two loop roads and a lovely visitor center are open for public visitation for a modest fee.
