The Flathead River snakes between the shoulder of Mt Cannon and a cloud shrouded Mt Heavens as seen fro the Going to the Sun Highway.

The Ford Model A (also colloquially called the A-Model Ford or the A, and A-bone among hot rodders and customizers) is the Ford Motor Company's second market success, replacing the venerable Model T which had been produced for 18 years. It was first produced on October 20, 1927, but not introduced until December 2. This new Model A (a previous model had used the name in 1903–04) was designated a 1928 model and was available in four standard colors.

By February 4, 1929, one million Model As had been sold, and by July 24, two million.[8] The range of body styles ran from the Tudor at US$500 (in grey, green, or black) ($9,156 in 2024 dollars[9])[8] to the town car with a dual cowl at US$1,200 ($21,974 in 2024 dollars. In March 1930, Model A sales hit three million, and there were nine body styles available.

Model A production ended in March 1932, after 4,858,644 had been made in all body styles. Its successor was the Model B, which featured an updated inline four-cylinder engine, as well as the Model 18, which introduced Ford's new flathead (sidevalve) V8 engine.

Another frame I've had laying around awhile of what was the first stop of our epic morning chase of the empty returning Montana Rail Link 'Day Gas' from Pipeline just east of Thompson Falls back to Missoula.

SD70ACes 4408 and 4406 (both built new for the road in Apr. 2014) are just three miles into their trip home as they lead a string of empties passing over the Airport Road crossing at about MP 26.4 on the modern day MRL's 4th Subdivision mainline, the former Northern Pacific Railway mainline. The track snaking up to the right is the lead to Thompson River Lumber, one of the few carload customers remaining on this end of the railroad and either of the gas locals may stop to service service them on their westbound trip if required.

These gas trains are strictly an intra-MRL affair having come into being in 1995 when a gap was created in the 40 yr old and 531 mile long Yellowstone Pipeline when the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe chose not to renew the pipeline company's lease of 21 miles of right of way across their Flathead Indian Reservation. Sweet liquid amber ... courtesy of late afternoon sun on the Flathead River Montana.

(the camera angle is a foot or two directly below the surface - shooting up)

The Santa Fe unit helps tag this as post merger, although the proper Cascade Green SD40-2 is leading. A Pasco to Northtown train begins its eastward grind up Marias Pass at ConKelley, Montana just east of Columbia Falls.

MRLs Day Gas train scurries along the Flathead River just southeast of Paradise, MT, with the staple ace pair for power.

I used to swim in this area as a teen, so I have fond memories of this place.

Here is another shot of the westbound Montana Rail Link 'night gas' train behind SD70ACes 4406 and 4408 (both built new for the road in Apr. 2014). They are leading a trainload of refined petroleum products from Missoula to Thompson Falls as they approach the Airport Road crossing at about MP 26.4 on the 4th Sub Mainline in the watm evening light. This was the final shot of this chase other than watching them spot the pipeline terminal that is only three miles or so ahead. These railfan favorite gas trains are the only trains on this end of the railroad anymore that are guaranteed to run with blue power. Strictly an intra-MRL operation, these trains came into being in 1995 when a gap was created in the 40 yr old and 531 mile long Yellowstone Pipeline when the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe chose not to renew the pipeline company's lease of 21 miles of right of way across their Flathead Indian Reservation. The Day Gas returns eastward on the 10th sub paralleling the Flathead River on March 30, 2024 near Paradise, MT

....is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western part of the contiguous United States. With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi (496 km2) and 197 sq mi (510 km2), it is slightly larger than Lake Tahoe. The lake is a remnant of the ancient inland sea, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial. Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide. Its known maximum depth is 370.7 ft (113.0 m), making it deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf. It is one of the cleanest in the populated world for its size and type.

After working our way east and then back west along the MRL our last evening in Montana would be spent following the night gas west from Missoula. Are last evening would be a good one with great light, a train moving into the sunshine and good friends. With any kind of luck I can make another visit before too much changes. This is a shot looking across the Flathead River between Perma and Paradise. 8.17.22

My old stomping ground.

I grew up in Polson Montana. It is a small community located on the south shores of this lake in the beautiful state of Montana.

I used to water ski, ice skate, ice fish, swim, play ice hockey, and other activities on this lake.

For those who don't know, Flathead Lake is one of the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River.

1938-1948 Ford Flathead V8

Needing a more powerful motor for their new Mercury line of cars, Ford introduced the 239ci "24 stud" engine (twenty-four studs holding down each cylinder head) in late 1938. Producing 95-horsepower and 170 lb/ft of torque, these engines were used through 1942 for civilian use and also World War Two military vehicles. These second-design blocks (often referred to as 59A castings) retained the integral cast-in bell housing,

The 1939-1948 Ford flatheads had insert-style main bearings, but still used full-floating rod bearings (one bearing shell for each rod pair). A direct camshaft-driven front-mount distributor mounted flush to the cover, with a horizontal shaft on the front of the engine.

From 1932 until 1953, the Ford Flathead V8 was placed in over 25 million cars and trucks. The engine's 21-year production is on "Ward's List of the Ten Best engines of the 20th century".

A BN local serving the branch from Columbia Falls to Kalispell is photographed near the Glacier Park International airport on a beautiful October morning in 1993. Shortline Mission Mountain has served operated over this branch since 2004. The logs were likely headed to the Plum Creek mill at Kalispell. This GP30 started life as CB&Q 976.

This area is the one that someone told me it is quite a "snakey" area and to be careful of rattlers. I've had "no" desire to back since then! LOL...but something is calling me to check it out again...maybe sometime soon!!! Have a nice week ahead everyone!

MRL 4408 & 4406 continue towards Missoula with the Day Gas, seen here between Perma and Dixon, MT. The 10th sub has been following the Flathead river along this section for several miles. 30 April 2023.

Note the ice, stretching far out. In the 43 years I've lived here, it has been completely frozen over a time or two. Maybe this year, the way the winter is going.

Well here’s a rod with a nod to history. It’s a Model A Ford that still has a flathead inline four engine. It does appear to have dual carburetors, a performance improvement touch. Fenders and engine bay covers removed, another two common hot rodding practices

Size: Flathead Lake covers an impressive 197 square miles (510 km²), making it the largest natural body of freshwater by surface area in the western United States.

Many Winters the entire lake will ice over on the top....quite a sight to see!!!! There are chunks of ice just knocking around out there now. You can hear them loud and clear too! :)

Smoky, August morning looking towards Flathead Lake headed back home to Idaho.

Here, a shot of one of the many islands improving the surface of lovely Flathead Lake in northwestern Montana. Excluding the island, there are at least a dozen different hues in this capture, all of them pastels.

This shot was taken just after sunset from a vantage point on the shoreline near Polson, MT. The Mission Mountains make up the background here. The sky and clouds were a gift from Mother Nature, who is extremely kind and generous with me, and who

accompanies me on many of my photo adventures.

This is such a beautiful place...I haven't really tried taking any pics of Flathead Lake...it's so huge that I can't really photograph it! Glacier Park may be fantastic...but Flathead Lake and the Mission Mountains is....Wowsa!!!! That is Polson Montana in the left upper corner...I lived there for about 30 bittersweet years! This is definitely the area for photographs and when I lived here I hardly took any of the area...it was all of my kids and day to day life....I couldn't appreciate the beauty here until after I'd left...weird huh? lol
