Derek Heyerdahl obviously has his hands full with this awesome Minnesota flathead catfish caught on (get this) a G. Loomis 7 wt. fly rod rigged with Derek's own "bullhead" pattern. The fish’s weight is unknown, but we’re certain "small" would not be included in the description! Quite a fight and a great catch!

Another fascinating engine design (to me anyway) is the classic Ford flathead V8 from 1932-1953. In this view, the right bank (as you're viewing it) is sectioned through a cylinder, while the left is sectioned between the second and third cylinders. That big thing running across the cylinders is the exhaust port from both of these two cylinders routing the hot exhaust from the valve (located inboard of the cylinders, due to the valve-in-block design) to the exhaust manifold on the outboard side. How in the world they managed to achieve acceptable cooling of these two cylinders, with that hot exhaust running right through where you would have wanted to place the cooling jacket, is beyond my comprehension. Cooling a flathead can be a challenge on a good day, and this design just doesn't look like it could have had many good days. Other flathead V-type engines generally placed the exhaust manifold inboard of the V, so the exhaust pipes came out the top. That placed the exhaust and intake systems close together, which could have its own issues with things like vapor lock, but at least it gave the heat somewhere to go.
Erected in 1902, the Flathead County Courthouse in a small traffic circle just south of downtown, was designed by the firm of Bell & Kent. It was constructed by contractors Hastie & Dougan, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
Flathead County is home to the western half of Glacier National Park, one of my favorite places.
The flathead is a - unsurprisingly, given the name, flat fish which usually rests in the sand.
It can be quire challenging to photograph in the sand. The sand-dwelling animals are often exquisitely camouflaged, and flat - there is no color contrast, and it is difficult to achieve an out-of focus background. A few subtle shadows, like on the left side of the flathead, can help here. Normally I like to avoid shadows, but in the case of a flat, sand-colored, sand-textured fish in the sand they can add depth to the picture.

Neighbor Cindy told me that the McPherson farm stand, just down the road, opened up this very morning and reported that they had some luscious Flathead Cherries, among many other fresh fruits and veggies, so named because they are grown up at Flathead Lake, about 125 miles to the north of us. After my morning hike, I slid down to check them out. They are as good as reported, maybe better, and before I set about disappearing them, I thought I would share at least a photo of them with you. Torturous, I know. Sorry. Some day: Teleporting.
