Both U.S. Highway 2 and the BNSF Railroad follow the Middle Fork of the Flathead River from
West Glacier for more than 30 miles to Essex, home of the Izaak Walton Inn. This view is just
a few miles east of West Glacier.
This very nice '40 Ford Deluxe Coupe was photographed at the Silver Springs Chapter AACA Car Show, Sandwich, Illinois, 2015. The flathead V8 sports a pair of Stromberg 97's and finned aluminum heads.
For three days I got to marvel at the clouds on Flathead Lake in Big Fork, Montana. The sunbeams that continuously shot through the billowing clouds were breathtaking.
I particularly love this shot because it's taken less than 20 minutes after the previous photo, and yet the sky is completely different.
The Flathead was 32.5. The big fish survived and was released back to hopefully be caught again.
Cought on nightcrawlers on 1/4 oz jigheads or bare hooks with a splitshot.
Caught on the Iowa river in holes around Union.
These cattle are grazing in the Flathead River valley near the mouth of Nyack Creek, between Essex and West Glacier. The river is beyond the treeline and the slopes above are in Glacier National Park. The last of the morning fog is lifting.
I've seen the cattle grazing here several times while passing by on the Empire Builder, and it was nice to be driving this time and able to stop for some photos.
Glacier National Park is a national park located in Montana, on the Canada-United States border with the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park encompasses over 1,000,000 acres and includes parts of two mountain ranges (sub-ranges of the Rocky Mountains), over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants and hundreds of species of animals. This vast pristine ecosystem is the centerpiece of what has been referred to as the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem," a region of protected land encompassing 16,000 square miles.
The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans and was dominated by the Blackfeet in the east and the Flathead in the western regions. Soon after the establishment of the park on May 11, 1910, a number of hotels and chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railway. These historic hotels and chalets are listed as National Historic Landmarks, and a total of 350 locations are on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1932, work was completed on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, later designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, which provided greater accessibility for automobiles into the heart of the park. the rats had been there, and inside, and in the trunk, and other places I couldn't even see. I wish I had a barn to put it in when I got it home. I left it in the driveway for two weeks and kept "hosing it off" to get rid of the rat s--- smell !
Traveling east from Whitefish, Montana on the Empire Builder in the autumn gives a good chance of seeing the Flathead River valley shrouded in fog.

as #8 heads by, a group of whitewater rafters raise their oars in salute from the Middle Fork of the Flathead River to the passing train near West Glacier,MT-8/8/12
Traveling along highway U.S. 2 between Essex and West Glacier affords many nice views of the Middle Fork Flathead River. Glacier National Park is beyond the far shore and a portion of the BNSF Railroad can be seen above the near shoreline.
There are some interesting rock ledges at the far shoreline as well.

Sunrise over Flathead Lake from Polson. I was hurrying to try and get somewhere that I could photograph the sunrise before the sun was well up, and managed to arrive at, of all places, a Best Western with a marina in Polson. There were a couple of hotel guests sitting on their balconies watching the sunrise too, which was kind of neat.

Scope & Content Note: This image documents investigations and construction on various units of the Flathead Irrigation Project. The Project was initiated to determine rights and distribute water originating on the Flathead Indian Agency in Montana to both tribal and non-tribal land. The establishment of the Reservation in 1855 preceded Montana statehood by nearly 35 years and presented many challenges in establishing senority and providing for equitable distribution of water for the irrigation of farms and ranches.
