The newest thing to fill my cube.

"This home was designed using the Passive House energy standard as a design tool & was certified Earth Advantage Platinum, as well. By carefully taking advantage of the sun’s relationship to the site, sealing all the air & moisture leaks in the home & using an appropriately large amount of insulation we could reduce the heating & cooling needs by up to 90%. By paying close attention to the sun, the designers were able to bounce daylight deeper & more softly throughout the home. To accentuate this effect, LED built-ins at the windows help to simulate natural light when the sun isn’t shining.

Attention to this level of detail has created a warm & open feel throughout the home. Most of the time, even in Portland's grayish climate, you don't even need to turn the lights on because the daylighting is so well thought out. A nice side effect of building to this higher standard is that you end up w/ a superior built home w/ far less maintenance in the future.

In addition to the energy savings, the use of reclaimed and FSC certified materials gives this home a real Pacific Northwest personality & fits charmingly in with its neighbors while still being undeniably modern!"

While I was searching through my flatfiles for something else, I ran across this Centrosaurus and the Hypsilophodon in the next image that I'd forgotten about. I did these for a class I was teaching on drawing dinosaurs at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. This one is pen-and-ink and markers.

Nothing like a little abstract bokeh to get the morning started! HBW!

(This is a closeup of a flat file handle with a very shallow DOF. I lined up all the handles and shot down through the "tunnel" getting this amazing bokeh.)

This is the flat file that my dad and brother made for me.

There are 12 clamps that pull out and each lift out of the cabinet individually for loading and unloading. It sure beats my old system of laying large sheets of art paper anywhere I could find a flat surface at the moment!

Two days ago Donna and I were down in Atlanta at our local IKEA store. Donna, the lady with the eye of an eagle, spotted some black flat files. VOILA!!! I've wanted flat files since the 1970s at least, but could never afford them. These were only $119.00 with a lot of assembly required. The assembly was time-consuming, but not at all difficult. I'd say that I spent about three hours on putting it all together, possibly less.

My only warning is that the instruction booklet and the other pieces are well protected in the carton (73 lbs.), but are very, very close to the surface. Be exceedingly careful opening the carton. I don't know if Ikea ships or not. The piece has six drawers with an interior dimension of 16½ x 23½ inches. Perhaps not an ideal size, but I am not complaining!

Quick glimpses of the Warnecke Architectural Archives, a rich collection not only for scholars specifically focused on the multi-generational Warnecke firm, but for those following major threads of 20th century American architectural history more generally. Thanks again to Margo Merck for her generous hospitality and guidance through her father's papers, and to the archive's supportive staff as well. A great visit.

Annoyingly ignoring the agreement we'd made not to buy gifts for any except the "big" anniversaries, Herr Doktor Der (Rather Stunning) Husband bought me something SO BIG for our 11th that he first tried and failed to pick it up with our station wagon.

He then arranged to borrow the neighbour's van and muscles, and the two of them wrestled in the booming, enormous flat-file cabinet that I've wanted for so long, here shown with skeletons and small dog for scale.

It's so ... so very big. I'm in awe.

neighbor was cleaning out his basement office this weekend... FREE flat file! F-yeah!!

I've had this fabulous flat file for almost 5 years and I FINALLY got around to labeling the drawers. Now I can actually find what's in them without having to open each one!

You are green with envy...or you don't get it. These are my new flat files, they rule the universe. This cabinet was purchased by Pratt and Whitney in 1947 for $1,000 I just bought it from a friend of the family for $50. freaken AWESOME!! Bruce built the stand for it, yippee!!

OK, the truth comes out:

the only reason I got paper printed

was that I finally had an excuse to get

a set of flat files. There, I said it!
