Our ISB fifth grade Flat Classroom Sounding Board students requested a Skype conversation with High School Flat Classroom participants. Thankfully Anne Mirtschin's class in Australia agreed to share their experiences with us!

Maybe stretching the theme a bit, but hear me out:

It was 97 degrees in Peoria, AZ this afternoon and I walked out of the Home Depot store to be greeted with this lovely flat tire. I dragged my jack and tire iron out fir the first time ever and proceeded to get on the ground and get dirty.

I'm not that old, 63, but I am overweight. I thought I'd be able to do a tire change. It proved tougher than I thought. I'm not as agile as I was at one time!

In the meantime, not one person acknowledged me or my predicament. No eye contact at all... even when I said Hi or nodded my head at them.

I finally called my insurance and found out that I have roadside assistance insurance. It was a 45 minute wait, but much easier on my body!

What really surprised me is that even when someone parked next to me, it was like I was invisible. When I'd offer a greeting, not one person would look me in the eyes. I think they interpreted my friendliness as, "Will you get on the ground and change my tire?"

I learned something from this. Eye contact and a word of encouragement would have been welcome this afternoon. I'm going to be more sensitive to that now.

They look as if they've been there forever and most possess a monumental grandeur which is hard to equate with a sudden speculative spree. But London's mansion blocks were the high density housing of their time and a source of much controversy and concern

The story sounds surprisingly contemporary. In the late nineteenth century central London was running out of space and wealthy bachelors and well-bred families were finding it difficult to locate suitable accommodation.

Flats were the obvious solution but in the eyes of the fashionable and the fastidious sharing a roof with total strangers was simply unthinkable.

Flats were damned with a double dose of original sin. Since the first to be built in London were philanthropic ventures, Model Dwellings for the deserving poor, they were forever equated with the lower orders and therefore beyond the pale.

But even worse, flats were foreign. The French, more specifically Parisians, lived in flats and everyone knew what a badly behaved, unhygienic, morally corrupt lot they were.

French flats, as R. Phene Spiers told the Royal Institute of Architects in 1871, were small and poorly designed, forced the upper classes to live in close proximity to their servants, and generally lacked refinement and sophistication.

In Paris, he continued, "utterly dissociated and discordant people" lived under one roof, but this would never do for London, where delicate English ladies would suffer "incalculable distress" if they encountered a common artisan on the stairs.

The French, he concluded, clinching the argument, "use very little water, believing they can wash themselves with the corner of a wet towel."

Convincing uptight English Victorians to live in flats was therefore a tall order, and there weren't many speculators keen to test the market.

When the first great mansion block, Albert Hall Mansions, was started in 1876 the developer Thomas Hussey worried that the scheme might fail and Norman Shaw, the architect, divided the block plan into three distinct sections, to be built separately, in an effort to minimise the risk.

As it turned out they had a winner on their hands and Albert Hall Mansions, with its ornate red-brick exterior, Dutch gables, triple windows, and iron balconies, kick-started the late-Victorian craze for mansion blocks which continued well into the new century.

Once Shaw had shown them how to do it more and more developers took the plunge and a rash of mansion blocks appeared in Kensington and St John's Wood, Marylebone and Maida Vale, Belsize Park and Battersea, Fulham and Chiswick.

As the fashion took hold whole streets were give over to mansion blocks Fitzgeorge and Fitzjames Avenue in West Kensington, Prince of Wales Drive in Battersea but the building frenzy came to a halt with the war, and never really revived.

Some exceptional mansion blocks were built in the thirties but thereafter the energy of the initial flurry was never reproduced.

Casual cool weather traveling outfit, with feminine flats for all-day comfort. Why would a girl need anything else?

As recently as the spring of 2011, this has become one of my regular stirrups work outfits. The guys basically ignore my femininity and carry on business as usual. The girls are fine with it...but they constantly encourage me to buy some pretty embellished ballerina flats and kitten heel pumps to feminize my outfits, until they can get me into skirts or dresses.

February 2012

Went to the doctor for my annual physical this week, wearing the above, with a sleeveless blouse underneath (for convenience in bloodwork and EKG) but without makeup or professional female hair style.

The doctor was/is fine with my apparel, and even has me wearing pantyhose every day, to improve leg circulation. She was pleased that I was wearing them.

Not once did I hear "sir." Instead, I was "Ms." The assistant gave me a few minutes to "remove your blouse, bra and nylons and pull up the legs of your stirrups so we can wire you" before the EKG. Never mind that I wasn't wearing a bra! As she was finishing, she commented about my cute flats, and asked if I've tried heels with my outfit. I said "not yet", and she told me to try a pair of 2" heels instead of flats. "You'll love how you look in them, you'll get a little taller, and they'll put some swing in your hips!"

Sounds like I should take her advice...

just me messing about again, this was a swan at fairburn who instead of being in the water with the others, decided to join us on the viewing jetty – and it was funny as he was about the same size as me!

(there is a photo of me next to it on my profile (under photos of me) taken by ‘andrew rickman’ – but i think you have to be his friend to see it?)

i just love the noise at it paddled around of its webbed feet hitting the wood!

“All my life, I worshipped her.

Her golden voice, her beauty's beat.

How she made us feel, how she made me real.

And the ground beneath her feet.

And the ground beneath her feet.

And now I can't be sure of anything.

Black is white and cold is heat.

For what I worshipped stole my love away.

It was the ground beneath her feet.

It was the ground beneath her feet”

Who invented the flat white? Australia or NZ? It's a trans-tasman tussle. And how is a flat white different from a cappuccino or latte? Oh you'll get a dozen answers: its the type of cup; the milk to coffee ratio; the texture and amount of the froth. But why are we arguing over coffee? Lets drink! (NZ_3018s) Thanks for viewing :)

flat roof house designs, People build houses to live comfortably. Just to make sure a ‘roof’ is on their head, under which they can live happily ever after. So, a roof has been a major design consideration while scheming a building. In the ancient time people use timbers and in some areas grass to build houses. And astatine the beginning of the development of engineering design concepts, flat roof is the common roof structure. Flat roofs mean a flat or horizontal covering upon the house or building. Which usually make of re-enforced concretes? In some cases, CI sheets are also used. And it is the most common types of roof, which is used all over the world. The main cause is it is easy to build and economical compared to other types of roofs. There ar several types of flat roofs. Such as: Asphalt build up, EPDM, Modified bitumen, PVC membrane roofing, TPO, Coal-tar pitch build up roof etc. The main thing about the flat cap is that as it is horizontal, so there mustiness be slight inclination so that water can run off easily. And they main problem about a roof is its longevity and strength, with decreases if there is moisture. So, it should be build with such type of material that does not absorb water. But, there is still some job about flat ceiling which is, it may be effective in hot countries but, in cold countries where snow falls is regular it may be dangerous. Snow will deposit on the ceiling and ultimately results cracking and destructions. So, it is non a good idea of using or building flat cap cold countries. Because, then there need regular cleanup of the roofs and also other materials must need to be used so that, snow can’t make any harm. But, it is costly. That’s why in cold countries cap slops ar common. The benefits of the flat roofs are: Full room space can be used under the roof; the roof-top can be used for vegetation or just to sit and for walking place. Solar panels can also be placed easily. Flat roofs, need to be maintained regularly. If there is water than knackered it within 24-48 hours. After storm of heavy rain check the cap if there is any crack or other damage. Regular checking of roofs for deformities and cracks and repairing immediately ar moldiness be done. If right care and management can be taken than your cap will last long and you will be able to live under a safe ‘roof’. Just after we got back into Vancouver, we got a flat tire. We filled it with sealant and tried to re-inflate it. We drove it to the gas station with low air and the tire almost fell off the rim. Then we had to wait for CAA to fix it for us - they were pretty busy because of the weather. We tried to change the tire, but the truck didn't have a jack.

Pine Flat Campground in scenic Oak Creek Canyon is one of the Forest's most popular campgrounds. The scenery is unmatched, the stream is stocked with trout. If the fishing aren't biting, you can always go swimming, hiking or birdwatching. Slide Rock State Park (listed in Life Magazine as one of the nation's ten best swimming holes) and the thriving resort town of Sedona are only a short drive away. It comes as no surprise this area is so popular. Learn more about the Pine Flat Campground, the Red Rock Ranger District, and the Coconino National Forest.
