It may look flat, but there's a deep canyon hidden not far behind that puddle.

We are taking a short hike out to the Citadel Ruin in Cedar Mesa.

or so it seems...

Looking roughly northeast from the top, a little above where the Spencer Trail ends.

The plume of pollution is from the Navajo Powerplant, the bump under it is Navajo Mountain.

Page looks close, though with route 89 closed, it's now a 90 mile drive from here.

The next big meander upstream in the canyon (probably out of frame on the left) is the famous Horseshoe Bend below Glen Canyon Dam, that's probably almost 90 miles by car now, too.

Despite the categorization of eastern Wyoming by many as a flat, boring, prairie wasteland, I have found this stereotype to be somewhat inaccurate in many places.

The former Colorado & Southern mainline, now BNSF's Front Range Subdivision, is one such place. What it may lack in the tree department, it makes up for with grades, curvature, & some impressive cuts as the tracks seemingly weave through the surrounding sandhills.

Seen here negotiating a deep cut, the H-LAUPUE1-29A squeals through an S-curve as it approaches Farthing, WY. The train has been battling up the 1% grade for the last 40 miles or so and has about 11 miles left before it will top out near Altus. However, those final miles up Altus Hill mark the steepest portion of the route between Wendover & Cheyenne at 1.68%. Apparently, back in the C&S days, it was fairly common for southbound trains to have to double Altus Hill due. I wonder how often that happens these days with BNSF's push to minimize horsepower per tonnage?

Hauling primarily Texas-bound freight (lumber, aggregates, & fuel oil) along with some LPG tanks for Arizona and a few RCPE hoppers carrying South Dakota bentonite for export by rail to Mexico, the 43 car manifest has had a non-stop trip south from Wendover having received a healthy track warrant out the gate from Restricted Limits MP 238 (Wendover) to NSS Federal (the last siding north of Cheyenne) and after the dispatcher checks to makes sure Cheyenne can handle them, they will copy another warrant giving them authority the remainder of the way into Wyoming's largest city. Eventually, the train will make its way south to Denver and onto Pueblo, CO where it terminates.

Flat Island appears to be a misnomer, as clearly it is not surrounded by water. However it may at times be an island, if the sand spit should wash away and at the height of king tides, it may be a possibility.

The farmer that owns these buildings keeps bison on his property. I'm wondering if this is where he houses them in the winter.

"Mapping out my plan to take over the flat."

Oh? Think you can do that?

"Yes. One toy shelf at a time."

Good luck with that, Loki.
