Astronomy 210 students at Cuesta College using flashcards in a peer instruction ("think-pair-share") interactive learning environment. Instructor sees feedback from student responses to a multiple-choice question; if responses are only 30%-70% correct, then students are given "about a minute" to explain to a neighboring student why they chose their response, before responding with flashcards again. Sample instructor dialog is posted here. Video by Cuesta College Physical Sciences division instructor Dr. Patrick M. Len.

I know that there are apps like Anki for doing spaced repetition, but there's something about making and using physical cards that helps me remember things.
I found these awesome signal flag flashcards from Dime Store Chic's super fun Etsy shop. You should visit.
The cards are small--about 1.5 inches by 3 inches, and have graphics on the front and back. They were designed to go with the "Bluejacket's Manual." I have a copy of that, too! You can see some scans here:

Just an experiment in making CC flashcards for the Welsh language that people can print via Moo. This is my proof of concept, but the resolution is too low and there's no bleed, so it won't work when printed onto a Moo business card. But you get the general idea of what I'm trying to do!

I made a set of flashcards to put around my room, not to really learn Japanese (as the alphabets are different in some of them: a few of these flashcards use kanji, while others use katakana), but for a pretty visual effect. I wanted to do as many random objects as I could, but I only ended up doing 8.

One of the boxes from my old spaced repetition system (SRS) for studying my Chinese flashcards at Princeton in Beijing Summer 1998. Separated by day of the week, then at larger intervals. I used the system from 1998-1999 when I designed some Mac software with SRS support to replace it called "Flashcard Wizard" in 1999. I later switched to iFlash and then to Anki.
Flash card I used in 1st grade, circa 1960.
