Shown are a few cards of trees found in Northern California - yes, there are more, but I wanted some of the art to show.

Sibley Tree Identification Flashcards 100 Trees of North America
take time
look around
remember the joy
slow down
and breathe
we can get
so wound up
in all that life
sets before us
but we have to feel
it may hurt
but do not shut it out
let it do the work that is needed
for without it
there is nothing

In spite of the fact that I was up EXTREMELY LATE last night [i got caught up studying], I had to get up pretty early to go to my follow up for my ADHD meds in Flowermound. Since all was well, it was a very short, uneventful visit. That, however, is not the best part of the story.
FIrst, the short good thing. The skinniest person in the world called me "skinny." if you're a girl, you know what this feels like. We discussed, for a few minutes, how much we LOVED to eat despite our small figures, then we both complained about the cold weather. i didn't know that it's not even officially winter here yet. So... it's 30 degrees (that's around -1 for those of you reading in celcius)
Second, I was sitting in the lobby waiting to be called back, and next to me sat a cowboy... ish. you know, pearl snaps, Lucchese boots, levi jeans... oh yeah, and his FLAMING HOMOSEXUAL BURBERRY SCARF. it would be one thing if it was a normal guy wearing a normal burberry scarf. I'm ok with that, i actually quite like it. But no. OH no, he was wearing the crinkled check scarf from burberry [don't judge me for knowing it's title, i've been christmas shopping]. This particular scarf is pink. SO. to recap. Cowboy. Boots. Levis. Dainty pink girly scarf.
and that's not even the best part.
what I think is best is what i heard come out of his mouth. I'll spare you the details, but he let a sentence that included both the phrase, "pre-nut" as well as "it's G_d's will" slip past his lips. This was no, no sarcastic quip, no friendly banter or repartee. He completely believed the words that were coming out of his mouth.
So he's just one of many tools in the Tool box that is the DFW area. Sorry, Dallas people, but if you didn't grow up here, it's hard to like it here.
ANYWAY, upon arriving home, i made my Study Fort. I've found that if I stack all the pillows on my bed into a fort and study in it, it almost makes studying fun. Weird, huh? Well, you do what you can.
Later on, i'll take a chemistry test, then my Micro Lab final... wish me luck!!!
PS: it's Boyfriend and my "almost anniversary" today. I feel stupid celebrating every month that we've been together, and prefer to go just by years, but we do acknowledge this day's existence by wishing each other a "happy eighth." it works of us.

I love "Teach-Me" Flash Card sets. The cover on this vintage box is so bright and happy. I think that education has lost the sense of unbridled wonder that makes mid-century educational products so appealing to me.

I found these awesome signal flag flashcards from Dime Store Chic's super fun Etsy shop. You should visit.
The cards are small--about 1.5 inches by 3 inches, and have graphics on the front and back. They were designed to go with the "Bluejacket's Manual." I have a copy of that, too! You can see some scans here:
I love flashcards, especially Vis-Ed boxes. I used them in college to study Ancient Greek. Truly.
These were found at a thrift store--I snatched them up right away!
I'm cleaning in my office (it is a nightmare) and am scanning or photographing as I organize.. I will be posting lots of found bits and pieces!

I was disappointed the last tour with dicking around with spanish, portuguese and spanish again. I curtailed my independent Japanese studies to prevent brain explosion. The issue is that I would really love to learn Japanese. I would love to spend some portion of my career in Japan or at least going there more than once or twice. I'd like to have to rely on interpretation less.
This next leg I'll be doing Polish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish with a possibility of a couple more. I STILL want to learn Japanese. I have a CD set and I have this book by which to practice my kana. The other day at Kinko's I halved 50 index cards to put each of the individual kana on to make flash cards in addition to practicing writing them. I like listening to the sounds, and now it's time to redouble my efforts to learn and internalize them, not just be able to reproduce them well.
With all of these other languages, I'm sure my head will asplode.

The person sitting at the table next to mine at Grind, the cafe in the library, was studying for the GREs. I did that ten years ago and my cards were never this neat or numerous. Also, mine weren't in both English and Chinese.

Astronomy 210 students at Cuesta College using flashcards in a peer instruction ("think-pair-share") interactive learning environment. Instructor sees feedback from student responses to a multiple-choice question; if responses are only 30%-70% correct, then students are given "about a minute" to explain to a neighboring student why they chose their response, before responding with flashcards again. Sample instructor dialog is posted here. Video by Cuesta College Physical Sciences division instructor Dr. Patrick M. Len.
