Was experimenting with the old flash the other day, I was on a ledge that hangs over the river with water rushing underneath it.

When I'm forced to use my flash I often turn to slow synchronisation which often makes up for the harsh shadows and the harsh lighting conditions.

This is the third out of the six Challenges I've received from my friend in the U.K. You can look in my Photostream and see "Macro" and 'Bottles" to see the other two.

The other two were easily staged and photographed, this one was a bit more of a challenge.

Strobist Info:

Three YN560IIs, one left and one right at an equal height to the spray, and one low in the background, pointing up towards the spray. All had Pale Gold Rosco filters and were at 1/32 power, but as you can see, the filters didn't really do the job very well. Such is life.

All were fired with Pixel Soldiers.

The Setup was since the strobes were facing each other, I ran a piece of cord across between the two, and used that as a focus point, manually focusing the camera. The strobes were maybe 4 feet apart.

Using a Pixel Oppilas transmitter and receiver, I was able to sit on the floor, and point the spray bottle up into the air and pull the trigger. The problem with that, of course, is I couldn't determine how out of focus it was until I got back to my computer and looked. You'll notice that the nozzle on the bottle and parts of my hand are out of focus, and some of the water, but as it spreads out, some comes into focus, and then goes out again.

This was shot with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, wide open, and 1/160th of a second and ISO 100. I probably could have increased the ISO to 200, or increased the flash power to get a shutter speed of 1/250th, but I like the 'rainfall' aspect of the photo, and wanted to see the drops up long enough to see them start to move a bit.

Comments are welcome, of course.

By Brendan Fernandes

"On Flashing Lights is a light and sound installation by Canadian artist Brendan Fernandes. A barricade of police vehicles will line Bay Street, opening space around a central stage. Throughout the evening, DJs from Toronto’s queer, immigrant and racialized communities will perform music in an uneasy relationship with the lights of police cars, signalling the historic tension between these groups.

The audience is invited to participate in the performance through dance, an expression of solidarity and community in the heart of the city. This work builds on Fernandes’ ongoing investigations of queer bodies and dance as an act of resistance. Once every hour, the music will stop, inviting a moment of silence and contemplation of lives that have been lost on dance floors in recent years. For many people, especially those in queer and racialized communities, the dance floor can be both a sanctuary and a space of anxiety. The music and lights are prompts to move and to reflect. Is this an emergency or a rave? What constitutes a “safe” space in Toronto, and for whom?"

This was a super fun exhibit, especially at 2 AM.

I got him before he even knew it was coming and I out reached him by 15 feet.

Got the DIY Ring Flash in the mail today. Without a radio wireless trigger or a cable release, I had to hold up a white envelope to bounce the flash so that it would trigger the 430EX. It was a very ghetto setup, haha.

The flash reveals a more puny fire.

I just thought this looked real cool...

I dug out my flash and started some experimenting.

A programmatically generated mircoscopic view. See interactive version here.

The view from the front. I'm going to be taking portraits of kids playing Suzuki violin this weekend.

The light wasn't so great that evening so I played around with off camera flash.

It works!

Took the LDR that usually tells the flash at what power to fire and stuck it between the two wires that complete the trigger circuit (hot shoe fitting snapped years ago). Whilst I had it open I replaced said LDR with a variable resistor for manual variable flash power output.

Now whenever my on-board flash fires, so does this old thing.

My Chaika is well & truly dead: it started raining screws and the shutter stopped firing less than a dozen shots in on this roll. This is the final frame from it.

We adopted Flash from Lollypop 2 years ago next month. Flash is a beagle mix (we believe it is Basset Hound / Beagle) and had been in Lollypop over 2 months when we adopted him. Flash was 9 years old and had been adopted 11 months earlier and returned. Flash is extremely submissive – never barks, growls, and barely make a sound. Heck, it’s tough to get Flash excited about anything … except when you first come home and at meal time. He also has separation anxiety – all issues we dealt with to make Flash part of the family. Flash has no interest in playing and generally spends most of his day curled up at the closest heat source (except in the summer when the A/C vent is Flash’s favorite hangout).

About a year ago, Flash started visiting his “Grandma” during the day and some evenings as her health had gone downhill. She is now confined to a wheelchair and requires 24/7 care. The amazing thing is ….when he visits “Grandma," Flash is transformed from "submissive lay in the corner and sleep boy" to "super watchdog beagle." If anyone comes in Grandma’s house Flash doesn’t know, he barks. When someone approached Grandma he didn’t know … he growled (first and only time we have heard him growl). He follows Grandma EVERYWHERE and always sleeps in Grandma’s room when overnight at Grandma’s house. When Grandma naps, Flash is always by her side making sure she is OK. And when he leaves Grandma’s house he cries like a baby during the entire car ride – and it’s not car anxiety because he never cries when the car leaves home and heads to Grandma’s house. All Grandma’s caretakers love Flash and want to take him home … Flash just wonders where all these people were two years ago when he waited 2 months to get adopted from Lollypop!

Nowadays, Flash spends most weekdays and a good part of the weekends at Grandma’s house. Grandma takes great comfort that Flash is always nearby, and Flash loves his Grandma. And to think someone dropped this wonderful dog off at Lollypop Farm when he got old … what a blessing Flash is for everyone in the family .. especially Grandma.
