Flamingos and oranges were once beloved symbols of the Florida experience, understood everywhere to mean a sunny, tropical, and easy lifestyle so desired by those who migrated southwards each winter to enjoy the abundant sunshine. Now, not so much--the tourists are still here, but the icons are plastic and manmade and the experience easily bought and just as easily discarded.

Who remembers Manfred Mann’s great single “Pretty Flamingo” from 1966 totally irrelevant to the shot really.
Apart from a great many Elephants Amboseli National Park in Kenya is a good spot for water birds. As I recall this was my first photograph on that particular safari.

Plastic lawn flamingos (Phoenicopterus plasticus) are an American cultural icon that was introduced in 1957 by artist Don Featherstone. In the 21st century, they are considered endangered. Efforts are underway to revive the art form, and in 2009, Madison, Wisconsin, named the plastic pink flamingo the city’s official bird.
The flamingos at Stone Zoo are used to people and don't mind me sticking my camera and flash in their face.
One of many beautiful creatures discovered on a beautiful day at the Birmingham Zoo. Thanks to Duncan (Nailbender) for the great conversation and inspiration on this great day of Discovery. We were as two little boys on their first trip to the zoo. What fun!
