Trying to catch the flag backlit by sunlight hitting it at a high, glancing angle of attack and pretty much overexposed the shot. (As anyone shooting waving flags knows, you never know how/when the wind will "whip" it into a nice form.)
When A Loved One Dies
by Leon Knight
Poetry is the process
of cleansing my wound,
the tweezers
for removing
grains of sand
inbedded in my skin.
Poetry is antiseptic
painfully applied
before the wound festers
salve rubbed in
fear of infection.
Poetry is the stiching clamp
held between my teeth,
the pain killer
so I can sleep.
Poetry is acceptance
of future scars,
and aches on foggy nights.
Poetry is a way of surviving
when a loved one dies.

To celebrate Flag Day, the U.S. Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Section brought nearly 300 high school students to the Ambassador’s residence to exhibit the displays they created to illustrate various representative elements for a particular U.S. state – and the District of Columbia. Although the high schools participating this year were at their first experience, the tradition of elaborate projects was very well kept.
At this 7th edition on June 14 (the actual Flag Day celebration!), Embassy judges awarded prizes in the following categories: Best Overall – Rhode Island (Colegiul National de Informatica “Tudor Vianu”); Runner Up Best Overall – Ohio (Liceul “George Calinescu”); Most Creative/Original – Maine (Grup Scolar Constructii Montaj “Elie Radu”); Represents the State Best – Florida (Grup Scolar Constructii Montaj “Elie Radu”); Most Informative/Educational – Virginia (Grup Scolar Constructii Montaj “Elie Radu”); Most Fun – West Virginia (Colegiul German Goethe); Most Detailed – Iowa (Scoala Superioara Comerciala “N. Kretzulescu”); Best Presentation – Kansas (Colegiul National de Informatica “Tudor Vianu”); Most Attractive – Arkansas (Colegiul National de Informatica “Tudor Vianu”) and People’s Choice, in which the participants voted Maine (Grup Scolar Constructii Montaj “Elie Radu”) as their favorite.
The winners received American books, music and movies. All students then enjoyed pizza and sodas on the residence lawn.

The weird thing you notice about rural Iowa (or rural anywhere, really) is the way they aren't shy about waving around a confederate flag. In the city, people seem to shun it due to its racist connotations...
This graphic is based on the american national flag design, it incorporates the internationally recognised CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) antiwar symbol. The CND symbol was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional artist and graduate of the Royal College of Arts in Britain.
The symbol is a mix of the military semaphore signals N - representing nuclear - and D - representing disarmament. Holtom, a conscientious objector during the Second World War, subverted this use of semaphores by placing the D over the N, the “upside down logo” signifying his anti-military principles.
The “peace symbol”, as it is usually dubbed outside Britain, was first brought over to the United States by Bayard Rustin, a key figure in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and a protestor at the 1958 Aldermaston march. Consequently, the symbol was used in civil rights marches and later spread to anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. Since then it has appeared around the world not only as a sign for nuclear disarmament but also as the international hallmark of peace.

The observation park, located on Old Post Road in Grand-Pré, was created in tribute to the local communities who supported the inscription of the landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.
From the observation park on Old Post Road in Grand Pré, you can see the memorial church of the Grand Pré National Historic Site. Looking north, you will see the vast dykelands of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that hold back the high tides of the Bay of Fundy. Further north of the causeways is Long Island and, in the distance, the Blomidon Cliffs. To the east and west, causeways protect the agricultural landscape.
