To celebrate Flag Day on June 13, for the 8th straight year the U.S. Embassy's Public Diplomacy Section organized a competition with high school students to develop depictions of all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia. Nearly 300 enthusiastic high school students took part in the competition which took place at the Ambassador’s residence where they exhibited the displays they created to illustrate various representative elements of each of the states, in order to convey the message for this year’s theme: “America’s Strength: The Diversity of Its People”. First time participating, this year's high schools were: Gheorghe Lazar (Bucharest), Mihai Viteazul (Bucharest), Nicolae Balcescu (Oltenita), Decebal (Bucharest) and Ion Neculce (Bucharest). The winners received American books, music and movies (Lucian Crusoveanu / Public Diplomacy Office)

Prayer flags set against a very modern (in the artistic sense) concrete structure. I like the juxtaposition of ideologies. It seems consistent with the agenda of the Dalai Lama: the blurring of the lines between western and eastern thought, science and spirituality interwoven into one beautiful tapestry...

Flag Day is already a well-known and beloved competition among students from five high schools in Bucharest, organized by the Public Diplomacy Section. Participating for the first time, this year’s high schools (Mihai Eminescu, Nicolae Iorga, C.A. Rosetti, Mihail Sadoveanu and Dimitrie Paciurea) developed depictions of all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia.

Held in the Embassy’s courtyard for the first time, the 150 students exhibited the displays they created to illustrate representative elements for each of the states, all related to the history, culture and language of the Native Americans. The winners received American books and stationary and had a fun pizza picnic on the lawn.

Day Thirty-Nine: Project 365

Today I sang with Paradigm Vocal Ensemble. It was a tiring day. I got up superearly to drive to the church where we were going to sing. After church, we went to one of our members' houses for lunch, where I managed to step on a bee or a wasp or something. It stung the bottom of my foot. It really hurts. I don't recommend stepping on creatures with stingers. Then we rehearsed and performed again in the afternoon.

After all that, I had to drive to my house and then to Stephen's and then to his parents' for a birthday party.

It's been a long day.

The Yellow Flag flowers from May to August and stands up to 150cms tall. It thrives in damp edges of ponds, lakes and rivers.

The long, stiff leaves of Yellow Iris, or Water Iris are sword shaped and have sharp edges.

The other name for this plant is 'Flag'. It probably came about when the 5th century king of Franks, Clovis, used it as a heraldic symbol on his battle flag!
