This group participated in the Mardi Gras parade last Saturday. They were VERY good. I was especially taken by the young drummer, so sweet and serious.
This shot was taken after the parade. They did a number on the overhead walkway before saying their goodbyes. HFF!
Viva's five kittens are sleeping and eating their way through their second day -
cats.about.com/cs/kittencare/a/trackdevnewborn.htm
The newborn kitten weighs just ounces, and easily fits into the palm of your hand. Her umbilical cord will fall off within two or three days, but her eyes and ear canals will not be open yet.
Kittens are very helpless at this age, but the mother cat instinctively knows their needs. She feeds them, keeps them close by for warmth, bathes them with her rough tongue, which also stimulates their digestion and helps them urinate and defecate.
Newborns will weigh an average of 3.5 ounces at birth and may double their weight by the end of the first week. They are simply little food processing factories at this point, and their only activities are nursing, sleeping, and passing waste. There is very little social interaction at this age, other than competing for their favorite nipple, where they will suckle while kneading with their tiny paws. The body temperature of a newborn is only 95° Fahrenheit, and their shivering reflex is not yet developed, so it is extremely important to keep them warm during this time.
Friends from afar were unable to make a trip and join me for this meal among many. They can look at this juicy burger and weep. When they are able to make the trip, we'll do this again.
My wife left me - just for a few days and after a power walk I was hungry so I deserved a big-ass burger. Sorry honey, it was a moment of weakness. It has onions, mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and other good stuff on it. Open wide to get a bite on this bad boy.

The clocktower in Five Ways is Grade II listed, and is in front of 60 Calthorpe Road.
Late C19. Iron. Square box with Gothic-style blank tracery to each face. On it a column with a 'capital' sweeping out to carry the clocktower, each face of which is beneath a little pediment. Finial at the top.
a Hamelman's five-grain Bread with Pâte Fermentée, my sourdough version. My first try at converting a recipe that uses commercial yeast to one with homegrown sourdough starter.
The house was a bit cold even though the dough was proofed for a very long time like 4-5 hours at each time first and second rise.
The bread's crumb is extremely tight as you can see but its taste is incredible, just a touch tangy and a bite full of seeds. The soaker is made up of: rye flakes, rolled oats, flax seeds, sunflower seeds and millet grains.
Next time I'll make sure my starter is very ripe & increase the amount of starter & Pâte Fermentée to 50% of the total dough to enhance the crumb texture and the tanginess.

Posting five photos taken yesterday, 12 July 2025, when I did quite a long drive SW of Calgary and SW of Nanton, including Williams Coulee. It was a hot day and reached 30C. The scenery is beautiful the whole drive and I knew there would be old barns to see and photograph. The only bird photos I took were of Vesper Sparrows, a Swainson's Hawk on a pile of hay bales, and a Western Meadowlark.
I got lost a few times, and was confused when one main road I turned on to gave it as 120 St E on my car GPS. I had never experienced that before - I have always known it as Highway 2! I ended up leaving that road and driving E until I found myself in an area that I was familiar with. I don't usually drive in this whole area, so I hope I remember that 120 St E is the same road as Highway 2.
Real photo postcard, postmarked 1909 MN. Mailed to an Alden, MN address. The back reads, "Dear Belva, When are you going to come down here? We have been looking until our eyes are sore. It has been pretty cold (here) for the last two days. I have five hens and one rooster. I got five eggs yesterday. Papa said for you to do your hair up in a (pug) and come along. Yours Milo S." Found in WI.
My best guess at what might put Mr. West back together was good old Five Minute Epoxy. Super Glue would probably work, but has a tendency to go places you don't want it to. And it dries somewhat brittle. The last thing this Johnny needs is brittle repaired joints. www.actionfigureuniverse.com/marx_original_johnny_west_01...

Some of the cars on the SALT Five Rally, June 2011. How many of these cars could you name?
The SALT rallies are for classic vehicles of the Cold War period, and the 2011 event was held in the area of Chelmsford in Essex.

Test shot with Nikon D700 + Carl Zeiss 100mm f/2 Makro Planar T* lens, ZF.2 mount. Shot at f/2.0
One of the coins that came back with me from India. This is a crop from the actual frame below. This was a hand held macro shot at the minimum focusing distance. Under these circumstances, my technique is to not use the focus ring, but to set it maximum magnification, and move the camera (along with my upper body, lol) back and forth to nail down the focus. Of course, it is necessary to stop breathing for a few seconds to accomplish this.
I did not have good lighting here, so I used the worst possible lighting - the built in flash on the camera. So the lighting is harsh and unflattering, but my priority here was to test focusing.
The Zeiss MP 100/2 is a wonderful lens to photograph “things” – anything big or small that is reasonably static, so accurate focusing and creative composition are possible. Its 100mm focal length provides a very nice reach, its fast f/2 allows available light shooting for natural looks, and its macro capability allows getting very close to the subjects.
I don’t think I’ve had so much fun shooting up a wide variety of “things”, including and not limited to such things as Coffee, Cauliflower, Books, Paintings, Clocks, Sculptures, Rocks, Crystal, Shoes, Pens, Fax machines, ChapSticks, Coins, Watches and Thumbtacks.
LOL – feel free to browse through these random shootings.
