Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?

This is not one of my typical MUG SHOTS. But perhaps it is a fitting "cup". :)

I took this in May on a very late evening walk. It has a late summer feel so it seems fitting to post it now before Autumn rolls in and all the pictures take on a new theme.

The mare was completely uninterested in our presence but the foal....

The smokestacks of the E. D. Edwards power plant stand idle in the fading light of sunset. Fitting, as the 1960s era coal-fired plant ceased operations a couple years ago. But the plant will see a new dawn as an electric battery storage site. And time marches on...

66568 leads 4L87 09.31 Tees Dock - Felixstowe North across the flooded Welney Washes (between Manea and Ely). 66557 was on the rear, but out of sight in this picture.

This was the first outing for my new camera, named as though it were the mark 3 version of what I'd been using for almost the last eight years (the mark 2 version), but in reality a new camera as it has been upgraded in so many ways. I'd been working in Ely, so took my camera with me in anticipation of a session here at sunset. The sun was still some way above the horizon when this appeared, not long before 4pm, but it had dropped into the cloud on the horizon by the time the usual train for sunsets appeared (4E20 from Felixstowe, over twenty minutes later) and the sky had lost its colour.

Unfortunately, for some reason the battery had run down on my monitor and, although I managed to set up the pole and take a couple of test shots, the monitor kept switching off. So I decided to do the shots from ground level, something I rarely do here now. I photographed both front and rear locos, changing the angle for the latter to include the girder bridge but not the trees on the right. However, with no containers right at the front (there were plenty everywhere else, including at the back) and the loco fitting perfectly between the sun and the small tree, I much prefer this one - and it's slightly different from others I've uploaded.

Manipulation notes: none at all - not even any straightening, cropping, lightening or darkening, increasing (or decreasing) the contrast, or enhancing the colours: it's straight off the camera! I had, however, set the camera to under expose by 1.3 stops based on the meter reading.

One day last month we found a pelican rookery that was so totally accessible it was a wonder why I was the only bird photographer nearby. This close up of a brown pelican bill is just something I thought was really cool, and if it wasn't for the close proximity of the roosting bird your life would not be as complete as it now is for seeing it. Yeah, take that last line with a grain of salt - it just fit the bill.

Inland Steel Steamer L. E. Block is at American Shipbuilding's yard at South Chicago in 1977.

This model was inspired by a LUG challenge focused around the Pirates theme. While I usually only make a few Pirates builds each year, it has always been one of my favorite genres. The one limit for the challenge was that your entry had to be no bigger than the largest official Pirates set. I have always been more attracted to the islands, forts, and land settings than ships themselves, so I settled on building a small fort on an island. A single 32×32 baseplate served as the foundation for the model.

For once a peaceful day with no pirates, or enemy ships in sight of the small Imperial outpost. Which makes it a fitting time to restock with some fresh supplies.

Bardot necklines are in all the stores this summer. They never seemed to suit me until I got this longer hairstyle, but now I love them. Bare shoulders look so feminine and I adore the sensuousness of my long hair on bare skin!

In this photo there is 2 collared doves and 1 mourning dove. I have seen as many as 7 doves on this platform. We mostly get the white winged doves.

The morning 7th of February I woke up to see Amsterdam covered in a coat of fresh snow. The snow fell in sudden flurries and gusts and turned the world white and wonderful. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in the winter. It snowed for the second time this winter in Amsterdam. Because the temperature was -4 degrees Celsius the snow stayed. The real feel temperature was -11 degrees Celsius cause there was a strong wind and drifting snow. It got more than a few centimeters of snow. The best advice is to stay indoors and turn the stove up a bit. Or of course to go outside to take some nice pictures. The snow is a rare highlight in these February dark days, especially when you have small children. It is quite difficult to come up with something fun in these Covid-19 lock-down days. After a while, sitting indoors becomes quite monotonous for such a toddler. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children and adults here in Amsterdam. Snowball fight, make snowmen, go sledding and adults go cross-country skiing. All fun activities that people do in this beautiful snowy world.

Storm Darcy was a storm that hit parts of Western Europe from February 7, 2021. In the Netherlands, Belgium, the east of the United Kingdom and parts of the north and west of Germany, strong winds were accompanied by drifting snow, creating snow dunes. The last heavy snowstorm in Amsterdam dates from 1985. De Bijenkorf is located on the Dam, the building is also adjacent to the Damrak and the Beursplein. The majestic building towers over Dam Square, ready to welcome shoppers. The name literally translates to the "beehive," which is fitting because the store is always buzzing. What started in 1870 as a small haberdashery shop has today grown into a famous department store chain with its flagship store located in a historic building on Dam Square. De Bijenkorf is best known for the luxury brands and stylish products it offers. On the 5th floor there is a restaurant with a view over Amsterdam. The iconic department store has been around for more than 150 years. Now during the Lockdown everything is closed. Expected more than 17 cm snow in Amsterdam. It's a joy to walk around in my neighborhood.

Loved this dress with its sweetheart neckline, high waist and net underskirt for fullness. Perfect for a very special summer occasion!

Excerpt from www.oakvillegalleries.com/exhibitions/details/228/Sascha-...:

Sascha Braunig's paintings and drawings are exercises in colour, form, and illusion. Citing an artistic lineage that stretches from the Pictures Generation through to the Chicago Imagists and horror-movie practical effects, her sometimes barbed, tubular, netted, or neon-lit forms speak of many of the tensions of the current moment, such as being a subject within the grid of digital or gender systems.

In this exhibition, which stretches over both Oakville Galleries sites, the Canada-born, US-based artist brings together new and recent works that are based on the compositional motif of figures engaged in conflict with a dress-like structure. These works use material qualities to analogize an immaterial idea: the feeling of struggling with a system more powerful than you, in which you are also deeply entangled.

Braunig builds and uses three-dimensional models as visual aids in the making of her work, some of which are included in the exhibition. Because of this observational painting practice, she sees her work as being linked to the academic nineteenth-century painter's use of the “lay figure," a jointed doll, not quite to-scale, that artists used as a stand-in for a live model in the studio. The exhibition's title, Lay Figure, refers to this historical practice, but Braunig extends its meaning to the schematic wiry figure that recurs in her recent work. Here she imagines the lay figure coming into a life of its own, squirming to free itself from rigid systems and resisting its status as the inanimate muse in patriarchal painting's history.

cute postcard I got for my mom, but very fitting right now considering I'm super tired and drained today...in urgent need of sleep =_=

With the UNESCO World Heritage site of Völklinger Hütte, the only preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation, in the background, SaarRail 151 161 enters the yard at Völklingen with the Suppenzug (Soup Train).

The slumber party was turning out to be the best one yet! The kids were fitting in as much fun as possible. This meant that food was an afterthought. They were all settled into their sleeping bags when Cami jumped up, "I'm hungry!" She screeched as if having a huge epiphany. Bubby let out a guttural whine and sat up, "Me too." Archer popped an eye open, "I could eat!" They all giggled and tore off down the stairs to the kitchen. While Archie searched for the perfect snack, Bubby found himself an entire cake and Cami found herself in a pickle. Oh no!

In what is probably the first time CSX has leased new wide cab power and not Second Generation EMDs, the CREX 1512 blends in much easier with the other units in tow as it is seen leading Q008 through the S curves of Ridgefield Park. The train is not even a mile from its destination in Little Ferry, NJ.

In pursuit of a Rust image i spotted these.rail fittings.

Better viewed large.

If given the chance, I probably would not have been able to arrange all these rocks, driftwood and fall leaves in as pretty a display as what I found these. I was walking the shoreline of Georgian Bay when I saw this wonderful collaboration of nature's elements. Everything fit together naturally. We could learn a thing or two from nature.

In this post I shared some photos of an old friend who passed away in November of last year: flic.kr/p/2rJoYJm

Father Mike Leckie was a catholic priest, a fireman, a lifelong railfan, a professional railroader latter in life, and a friend to all...and is dearly missed. A couple months after his passing the Old Colony and Newport Railway, where he had volunteered for decades, ran a private chartered trip as a memorial for his friends and family to share stories and camaraderie. The museum group borrowed Newport and Narragansett 65-tonner number 66 and former BC Rail Budd RDC BC-15, the latter of which was adorned with a special drum head for the occasion which was then donated to his surviving sisters after our trip. It was a fun trip full of smiles and memories and Mike sure would have liked it.

At our turnaround point we performed a photo runby and posed our little train in the backyards south of the Bristol Ferry Road crossing. This is about MP 10.8 on the state owned Newport Secondary which would have been MP 19.2 as measured from Myricks and the junction with the New Bedford mainline back in PC and early CR days.

Rising beyond is the Mount Hope Bridge. Opened in 1929, it is a two-lane suspension bridge spanning the Mount Hope Bay at one of the narrowest gaps in Narragansett Bay. The bridge connects the towns of Portsmouth and Bristol and is part of Route 114. Its towers are 285 feet tall, the length of the main span is 1,200 feet, and it offers 135 feet of clearance over high water with a total length of 6,130 feet.

This location is so named because prior to the opening of the bridge a ferry operated here having started all the way back in 1640 I the early colonial days. In the 19th century it had both rail and trolley connections and continued in service almost three centuries until finally becoming obsolete when this span opened to traffic. To learn more here's a neat blog: portsmouthhistorynotes.com/tag/bristol-ferry-area/

BC-15 is a Budd RDC-1 blt. Feb. 1957 as Canadian National D102 and later VIA 6102. NNB 66 is a GE 65-tonner, was built in 1943 and was most recently numbered USN 65-00566 where it served with a sister unit at the Portsmouth Navy Yard until being replaced with a trackmobile several years ago. In 2024 she and sister unit USN 65-00308, two years her junior, were purchased by Eric Moffett and trucked to Rhode Island with the the 65-00308 being assigned to the Seaview Railroad freight operations at Quonset Business Park. She wears a sharp paint scheme applied just last year and the logo for the Grand Bellevue Dinner Train for which it is the regular power.

Una aldaba es una pieza articulada de metal situada en las puertas exteriores de las casas y que sirve para llamar a sus ocupantes por medio de golpes en la puerta

A door knocker is an item of door furniture that allows people outside a house to alert those inside to their presence. A door knocker has a part fixed to the door, and a part (usually metal) which is attached to the door by a hinge, and may be lifted and used to strike a plate fitted to the door, or the door itself, making a noise. The struck plate, if present, would be supplied and fitted with the knocker. Door knockers are often ornate, but may be no more than a simple fitting with a metal bob, or ring.

To what degree was it stage managed that the star of the show was the last balloon to stand up? Whether it was or not, it was a fitting climax to a fantastic morning to see the multicolored hummingbird balloon rise up. It is a big balloon, seeming to dwarf Old Parliament House from this perspective. The white color of Old Parliament House was also the perfect backdrop to the bright colors of this balloon. Looking closely at the crowd, I can see that people were riveted by the sight of this balloon. And nobody left before the hummingbird had lifted off and drifted well out of view.
