With its distinctive plumage and evocative cry, the African fish-eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is probably the most familiar bird of prey in Africa. Perched majestically on a high branch, the contrast between the white upper-body and tail (not obvious in this shot), the chestnut belly and the black wings is unmistakable.
Aside from fish, this efficient raptor will also take the young of water birds such as the lesser flamingo, and very occasionally will go for monkeys, crocodile hatchlings, frogs and insects.
I took dozens of shots of Fish Eagles in Kanana Nature Reserve before I was satisfied with this one, and a few others. My recycle bin is filled with rejected Fish Eagle shots.

Macro Mondays 25/09/17 theme Zodiac.Macro capture of the scales on my Yellow Tailed Damsel Fish.This was taken through the glass when she decided to come out from behind the rocks in the tank.It took a few takes to get an OK shot as the camera kept locking on to the glass and she kept on going back behind the rocks when the camera or my hand moved.
A reddish egret flies off with its prized catch.

A slightly different take on a mackerel sky the common term for a sky with rows of cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds displaying an undulating, rippling pattern similar in appearance to fish scales; this is caused by high altitude atmospheric waves.

River Tummel Pitlochry, fish ladder
The Pitlochry fish ladder is a fish ladder next to the Pitlochry Power Station on the River Tummel near Pitlochry that allows salmon to travel upstream during the breeding season.
This grebe had a successful fishing venture. I watched for over a minute as it worked this fish down its throat. On Commonwealth Lake.

It was a coincidence, on the other side of the little creek were calves that I actually wanted to photograph. Suddenly there was a splash in the water and I was scared. Ah, a small fish, well it could not be the great white shark ;-))) It's not the best quality, but hey, it's a fish and it had to be quick.

X-ray of flowerhorn fish, a misshapen head, skeleton and the black swim bladder are visible in this image. The stomach, liver, intestines and other organs are located in the space below the swim bladder. This fish is an ornamental cichlid that has been overbred in order to produce the huge head and the very bright (unnatural) colors. Much like pugs and bulldogs, the facial bones are abnormally shortened which can cause feeding and developmental problems.

Brown Fish Owl, Ketupa zeylonensis, Tumbuk Ketampi Rimba
This species is an all-year resident throughout most tropical and subtropical parts of the Indian Subcontinent to Southeast Asia and adjoining regions. The typical habitat of brown fish owls is forest and woodland bordering streams, lakes or rice fields. It inhabits mainly the lowlands, from open woodland to dense forest as well as in plantations. Brown fish owls frequently hunt in still or stagnant waters. It feeds mainly on fishes, frogs and aquatic crustaceans. Classified as totally protected species in Peninsular Malaysia.
As it's a cold and dull Sunday here I thought I'd go through some of my Cook Island photos from January as a reminder of that tropical climate!! How nice to be back in the lagoons of Rarotonga, even if only by photo!
