Viking did a magnificent rebuild of this Turbo Beaver for the RCMP and not long after it went into service, the RCMP pilot forgot to raise the wheels prior to making a landing on a lake and the expected result happened. The pilot and two conservation officers survived without injury but the Beaver was written off and salvaged and rebuilt by North Cariboo Air Services in Fort St John.

I am going to take this firewall which has a bad hard drive and run Monowall on it. The stock OS is Nokia IPSO and it usually has a 40gig laptop drive in it. The drive often dies after 24/7 operation rendering the whole device useless.

The Nokia IP130 is basically a 300Mhz PC in a very small box. It uses a Geode super low power all-in-one chipset. The CPU component is Pentium compatible so any kind of console based OS would work fine on this box. There are no fans and it powers itself using a 1amp 12v external power supply.

It does not have a VGA, USB, Floppy or PS2 ports so you have to use a OS that can do without those.

This Boeing Stratofreighter was originally delivered to the US Air Force as KC-97G, s/n 53-0317, c/n 17099.

The Pratt & Whitney R-4380 engine and its mount have been removed from the number four (or right wing, outer) position.

The upper section of the "firewall" includes a variety of connectors for all of the electric power, instrumentation and other wires and cables which had to be disconnected before engine removal.

The next day, I prepared the seat heater relay and wiring harness. This “simple” task took way too long I thought…

This relay wires up to the voltage regulator just the way the stock rear defogger does, so that it energizes only when the engine it running. I did not want the current-hogging seat heaters to run when the engine is stopped.

The relay was prepared earlier and later its mounting holes were drilled in the firewall.

I also cleaned up the firewall in this area and found it to be pretty nice under all the dirt. I hope to clean it only and not repaint it as it is in not too bad a shape and the QC markings are still there.

The wiring was planned and fabricated to look much like stock. The relay connector was had at Rockauto, and the fuse holders were found locally at Autozone. Only the BUSS brand holders were black and used black wires. The fuse for the relay is 3A and the seat heaters needed 20A. A matching fuse holder was also bought to replace the non-original A/C fan fuse holder that was crimped on in 4 places already…

The EMI reduction capacitor and clamp was removed from the regulator, cleaned and painted. The capacitor terminal was integrated with the new wire harness as illustrated by the service manual.

Here are the harnesses...

Top one is the regulator to relay coil harness, middle is hot junction to relay harness, and lower is the new A/C blower high-speed feed…. Near my (sliced) finger is the metal sleeve that was soldered on, that will solder on to the wiring stub already on the car.

This work took over 5 hours… At the end of making the last harness, cleverness and intelligence were replaced with tiredness, frustration, and as a result, stupidity… I about lost my ring fingertip when a razor blade slipped from a part I was holding in my hand, and not with pliers. The tip is still there, now just a flapping cover which I had secured with paper towels and masking tape; hopefully it will heal somehow…

That ended that day in the garage real fast!

I flattened the bottom "L" and added an "L" for mounting. I also bent the top out which gave enough room to get the AC unit in the dash.

Obviously the firewall runs on a SunFire ;-)

My new home firewall, running pfSense. Intel D945GCLF2 motherboard with a Adaptec ANA-6944A/TX network card. Had to modify the Cooler Master Centurion 534 case to fit the large old network card.

The gear, designed to be mounted on the back of the firewall, rakes back 4º instead of forward 4º

This is the skeleton for the firewall mold. The short leg is the same angle as the s-panel. This mold will go in a vacuum bag, so it needs to have enough strength to withstand 14psi.
