Expanded or exfoliated vermiculite is utilized based upon its intended application which would determine the size/quality of material (or grade) to be used. For example, smaller grades may have been used in acoustical ceiling/wall treatments and small-to-moderate flakes might have been used as an additive in surfacing plasters or in the once popular spray-applied fireproofing materials, such as proprietary Monokote with Libby-vermiculite produced by WR Grace.

Also shown in background are a few examples of Zonolite advertisements and marketing tools. Celebrity endorsements seem to add a touch of credibility to their featured products, such as using Bing Crosby's face on a Zonolite "leveling rake", even despite the later proven toxic nature of Zonolite.

Jenson Button is retiring from F1 after 17 years, a career that had a great many ups and downs. The biggest up coming in 2009 where he ended the season as World Champion with BrawnGP. Here he is in 2015 for McLaren Honda.

Another example of asbestos-containing snow decoration vintage carton; "WHITE CHRISTMAS" brand. Some of the fibrous asbestos snow material can be seen protruding from box lid and clinging to box exterior.

Not all asbestos products are plainly labeled to indicate asbestos content; the fake snow material in this antique cardboard box is actually almost pure chrysotile asbestos (serpentine asbestos), without any addition of mica flakes.

Such a "real-life" product artifact as this seems to give additional meaning to the concept of "non-occupational" exposure to asbestos.

The artificial snow is rather realistic in appearance, very powdery and very white. However, one would not want to dream of this "White Christmas".

Vintage box of fireproof asbestos snow decoration. While not all products may have been distinctly labeled to contain "asbestos", the highly fibrous material in this antique cardboard container is 100% pure chrysotile asbestos.

Directions on the side of the carton indicate:

"FOR BEST EFFECT-- sprinkle on tree after it has been completely decorated. Easily removed from rugs and carpet with vacuum cleaner. Can be used over and over again."

Example of newly applied (2010), non-asbestos sprayed-on fireproofing on vertical and horizontal structural steel components, and associated overspray on deck.

This particular insulation material is dense, but not hard to the touch; it's actually somewhat crumbly, powdery, fibrous, and susceptible to simple abrasion damage. Upon close study, it also contains tiny vermiculite flakes, rather similar to Monokote-style fireproofing.

Doubl-Glo brand vintage asbestos "Penguin" snow drift in original carton, made by Paper Novelty Mfg. Co., New York.

While not all asbestos products are plainly labeled to indicate asbestos content, the fake snow material in this antique cardboard container is comprised of nearly 95% amosite asbestos (asbestiform-grunerite amphibole), with just a smidgen of mica flakes. Amosite composition also explains the beige or light tan coloration of the asbestos fibers.

Again, ever wonder where non-occupational asbestos exposure(s) might have occurred in one's lifetime?

This artificial snow is realistic in appearance, extremely powdery and very white.

In reality, what material didn't have asbestos added to it, in it, or on it at some point in the past?

View of an asbestos textile moneybag, a vintage novelty item by H. Fishlove of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. - 1967. The coarse cloth contains approx. 75% chrysotile asbestos, but sewn together with cotton thread (hey, it's a gag-gift).

The asbestos textile moneybag shows a screenprinted "guarantee" that one's money is in "FIREPROOF ASBESTOS - TO GO SAFELY THROUGH HELL - FIRE - BRIMSTONE". Although, not certain how one could challenge such a claim, but the silly premise of the novelty is certainly worth a chuckle, right?

Unfortunately, the apparent hilarity of the moment might be "short-lived" realizing the ironic twist that asbestos may bring one's demise a little earlier than expected.

Image of asbestiform grunerite ore, also known as: AMOSITE or "brown asbestos". Amosite, not specifically a mineral name, is a commercial term derived from an acronym of an original mining locality (AMOSA Mine): (A)sbestos (M)ines (O)f (S)outh (A)frica + -ite. Typically observed in hues of tan to brown, amosite was also historically known as: "brown asbestos".

Although certain corporate policies by several large manufacturers in the past tended to obscure medical findings indicating that asbestos was harmful to their employees, eventually mainstream publicity highlighting chronic respiratory exposures to amphibole asbestos minerals (such as amosite) became well correlated with human illnesses and fatal diseases including lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Not as flexible as chrysotile (serpentine asbestos), amosite tends to be somewhat brittle and did not readily lend itself to certain asbestos applications such as in textiles or many paper products, but was found to be particularly advantageous when used in thermal system insulation (TSI) materials involving high-heat or fire-resistancy requirements (e.g.- spray-applied fireproofing, etc.).

View of a vintage 1-ft. square asbestos ceiling tile depicting a pattern of two-size pinholes ("constellation" pattern), a common pattern still used by some ceiling panel manufacturers.

By all appearances, the surface of the panel's front-side seems quite ordinary and doesn't show any apparent evidence of its asbestos content, which is partly the intent of this image.

Although suspect materials like ceiling tile can be simply assumed to contain asbestos by an accredited asbestos inspector or surveyor, visual observation alone is not considered an adequate means of determining asbestos content.

For determining a conclusive presence or absence of asbestos, requires samples of the material be analyzed using approved microscopy techniques such as polarized-light microscopy (PLM) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) by a qualified laboratory.

Many large asbestos manufacturing companies each had their own line of proprietary products similar to their competitors, such as this antique, labeled sample of "Asbestos Ebony" from the the Johns-Manville Corp. With an attached felt, backing this heavy product advertising material was likely used as a desktop paperweight.

Touting many advantages useful in industry, such as being electrically non-conductive, durable, fireproof, etc., this asbestos material was often used as support panels for electrical control apparatuses, wiring, equipment switches, breaker units, arc insulators, among a multitude of other uses.

The Palace of Fine Arts is a monumental structure located in the Marina District of San Francisco, California, originally built for the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition to exhibit works of art. It was constructed from concrete and steel, and the building was claimed to be fireproof.[3] According to a metal plate at the rotunda,[4] it was rebuilt under B.F. Modglin,[5] local manager of MacDonald & Kahn, between 1964 and 1967. In the years 1973 and 1974, the columniated pylons were added.[1] It is the only structure from the exposition that survives on site.[6]
