1958 Firebird III at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
Seven fins or nine (Count'em!) marked the third Firebird iteration. GM engineering and design insisted this was "a practical workshop for testing new car advances." Fifty years ago, the "third bird" boasted and ultrasonic key that opened the door automatically, a completely formed plastic interior, uni-control steering (without steering wheel, shift lever, brake pedal or throttle), telltale warning lights instead of gauges, automatic cruise control, electric road guidance, light-sensitive automatic headlamps, and temperature control that allowed you to set the inside temperature before getting into the car. Many of these features are commonplace today, but they were quite radical a half-century ago. The Firebird III made a brief appearance with Elvis Presley in, "It Happened at the World's Fair."

The fourth-generation Firebird amplified the aerodynamic styling initiated by the previous generation. While the live rear axle and floorpan aft of the front seats remained largely the same, ninety percent of the Firebird's parts were all-new. Overall, the styling of the Firebird more strongly reflected the Banshee IV concept car than the 1991 "facelift" did. As with the Camaro, major improvements included standard dual airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, 16-inch wheels, rack-and-pinion power steering, short/long-arm front suspension, and several non-rusting composite body panels. Throughout its fourth generation, trim levels included V6-powered Firebird, and V8-powered Formula and Trans Am. The T5 five-speed manual transmission was standard with the V6s, as was the Borg-Warner T56 six-speed manual for the V8s. A four-speed automatic was optional for both, featuring built-in electronic controls beginning in 1994.

This was my 1979 Firebird Esprit with a 301 cubic inch/4.9 litre V8 engine. When I bought it, it was battered and in need of an overhaul. It had a bare metal re-spray into Vauxhall Flame Red. The wheels were already on it, but I replaced the trims with correct ones. The rocker panel moulding in the sill was missing on this side and I bought one in Florida and brought it back as hand luggage, though it did go in the hold, inside a long plastic water pipe! The Firebird badges are actually intended for an earlier model, but were the only ones I could get at the time. I replaced the interior with one from a Camero. It just needed the seat runners swapping. This photo was taken just before I delivered it to its new owner.
