Saw this male soaking in some sun, it had been raining heavily during the night.

Its natural diet consists of fruits and small animals, possibly pests and small vermin, so traditionally farmers appreciate their presence. Rice grain from the paddy field would probably tempt their hunger sometimes, turning them into villain hence the Malay proverb "Harapkan pegar, pegar makan padi" (Trust not the pegar, perchance they consume your rice").

It wasn’t too long ago that we posted a photo of the rather dazzling Siamese Fireback. Another equally attractive fowl is the splendid Crested Fireback; just one more good reason for you to consider a visit to Malaysia and Borneo. Sadly, these firebacks, with their distinctive blue mantles and funky black crests, are listed as Near Threatened due to habitat loss, largely as a result of the logging industry. This striking individual was photographed by Rainer Summers in Malaysia. If you haven’t already checked out the details of our next departure, visit goo.gl/dTv7hJ

Montpelier's construction began in 1781 after the marriage of Ann Ridgely and "Major" Thomas Snowden in 1774, each a member of prominent Maryland families. Situated upon a high knoll above the Patuxent River, the site commanded an unequaled view. Two firebacks in the house inscribed "TSA 1783," indicate the owners and probable completion year of the mansion.

Seventy acres and the house itself remain of what once was a plantation with land holdings of approximately 9,000 acres, an array of outbuildings, including various tobacco barns, stables, and slave quarters, among others. Although limited documentation is available about the daily operations, enslaved Africans and indentured servants provided the labor as field hands and skilled craftsmen at the plantation and the Patuxent Ironworks.

The Snowdens' reputation for genteel hospitality and the proximity of their home to the main road to northern cities, such as Philadelphia and New York, made Montpelier host to many famous people. George Washington visited several times, most notably on his way to and from the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Abigail Adams also stayed at Montpelier and described the estate as a "Large, Handsome, Elegant House, where I was received with what we might term true English Hospitality."

Montpelier remained in the Snowden family until 1890. Throughout the years following 1890, the estate changed ownership several times and new facilities were constructed. In the early 1900's, the kitchen and servants' quarters extension off the south wing were added, as was the seven-stall garage, known as the carriage house. The house was restored in the 1980s to reflect the occupation of Nicholas Snowden who inherited the house from his father and owned it until his death in 1831.

Montpelier Mansion, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the finest examples of 18th century Georgian architecture in the state. Large trees and boxwood grace the landscape which features a rare surviving 18th century summer house.

We have grates that have been in

operation since 2000 and no customer has reported burn through.

All our products are made with fully

welded uncoated non-galvanized structural grade industrial carbon

steel, and UL certified electrical components.

We use 100% renewable wind and hydro

electricity in our shop, and when possible, we use re-purposed and

recycled steel.

Here is how it works:

Our all steel design uses several

perfectly sized heavy duty thick wall tubes for maximum heat

exchanger surface area, superior airflow volume, minimum burn

through, and maximum combustion area volume. The tubes are welded

together forming a channel that is filled with cool home air. The

tubes then heat the air as it passes through them. Hot air is then

blown back into the your home with velocity. This adds conduction

from the hot coal coals and convection from the flame, heating to the

radiant heat of a fireplace, recovering otherwise lost energy or BTU

from the embers and flame of your fire.

The AC fans plug into a standard 110

VAC wall outlet (DC optional for solar panel, wind, solar cell, photo

voltaic cell off grid or grid tie applications), they are quiet

running at a measured 50 db or less decibels, and rated at 100 CFM

each. With the option of a variable speed fan control when mood is

more important than heat output you can reduce the background hum of

our heat exchangers in operation for the perfect ambiance.

Customers have observed how the warmth

generated by these Heat Exchangers can circulate to the adjoining

rooms in your home. A customer sent us many thanks when our grate

prevented the freezing of his pipes in -20 weather when his natural

gas furnace broke and the part was over a week away. This serves to

increase the comfort of your entire home, conserve the amount of wood

you burn, and nearly eliminate the need for other expensive methods

of climate control such as electric heaters, heat pumps, corn or

pellet stoves, and central air oil or gas furnaces.

One of the Gold Coast Railroad Museum's most prized display pieces is former Florida East Coast 4-6-2 Pacific Steam Locomotive #153. Built in 1922 by ALCO, it spent 15 years with the Florida East Coast until 1938. On the FEC the Engine gained notoriety twice. First for hauling President Calvin Coolidge's Train to Miami in 1928 and again in 1935 when it pulled the last Train off the Key West Extension before it was swept away by the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. In 1938 the 153 was sold off to U.S. Sugar for Cane Train Duties around Western Palm Beach and Eastern Hendry Counties. USSC retired the Engine in the 1950s as they began to phase Steam out of its Rail Operations in favor of Diesel Traction. In February of 1957 it was donated to University of Miami President Jay F.W. Pearson for his newly established Miami Railroad Historical Society. On Friday April 12th it arrived at the South Campus after moving cold over Atlantic Coast Line, Florida East Coast and Seaboard Air Line Rails. The MRHS used the Engine for their weekend Train Rides around the former NAS Richmond site and later Fort Lauderdale starting in 1966. That same year the 153 was given an extensive $10,000,00 overhaul which involved cleaning and retubing the boiler, adding new superheater units, and refurbishing its injectors. Its staybolt caps were also replaced with exclusive "Gold Coast" staybolt sleeves. A new "dry-pipe" and fireback lining was also installed. Externally, the Engine was refitted with its original passenger type pilot and given new running boards and headlight bracket. Its age and Damage from Hurricane Andrew sidelined 153 permanently to merely a display piece in 1992. Between 2000 and 2002 the 153 was given an cosmetic restoration. It was very hard to leave and walk up to the top of cold hill and wait for the sun to finally set. Well worth it in the end though.

I'm not sure if this is correct but my guess is the "HN" monogram may refer to 'Henry of Northumberland': Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, who lived at Petworth in 1622.

The coronet seen at the top of the picture bears the attributes of the rank of Earl and so is consistent with this interpretation.

Here the wrought-iron fire-basket and dogs refer to the earlier Tudor period when the burning of logs was more common. Coal was rarely used at this time, at least in the more rural areas such as this. The fireback is a modern take on the former fashion of highly decorative backs portraying scenes, dates and initials. Note the use of small bricks to line the fireplace and hearth to reduce the risk of the fire migrating! This provided a surface for further decoration according to how the bricks were laid, herringbone etc.

The overmantle is typical for the period, classical and mythological figures support the mantle whilst heavy cartouches or carvings fill the panels. This example is in wood, many were in plaster or stone. Here the decorative plaster of the friezes and ceiling have been painted in bright primary colours, highlighting the figures and characters. This is somewhat controversial, as little evidence survives for supporting such an action, but some does. Plas Mawr in Conwy and Buckland Abbey in Devon exhibit such painted plaster detailing, and no doubt represent the fashion of the day for bright colours and painted surfaces on both plaster and timber within houses.

I find the placing of candles in the upper holders of the dogs a little annoying as this was not what they were intended for. Such features would have supported metal cups and utensils for keeping food and drink warm, the juices for basting meat and other items required in connection with cooking if in a kitchen or parlour. Candles in this location would not have served any purpose and would simply have melted, besides, they were too valuable to waste in this way.

Rose Hill Mansion - This is a section of the office. Here you see a late Empire mahogany fall-front desk with many cubbyholes and scroll legs, which was used by Robert Swan, for forty years, to preside over the business of his Rose Hill farm. To the right you get a glimpse of the fireplace. The mantel which is painted black, has Tuscan columns with a cast-iron fireback inside the fireplace. The door you see is one of the two outside entrances, which were for the farm manager and other business guests, thus preventing them from having to go through the house. Located in the mansion on Route 96A in Geneva, NY.

Fireback Crayfish are primary burrowers, indicating they almost never leave the safety of their burrow complexes. Their burrows are constructed in muddy seeps or along small streams where the soil is perpetually saturated. This species has an extremely small range, occurring only within a handful of steephead ravines along the eastern bank of the Apalachicola River in Florida.
